Dagsboro – The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred earlier today .
The preliminary investigation has determined the incident occurred at approximately 11:03 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, 2017, as a 31-year-old Millsboro man was operating a 2008 Honda CRF 450 dirt bike traveling northbound on the southbound shoulder of Dupont Boulevard (US 113), approaching a private driveway exiting the Del-One Federal Credit Union (FCU). A 1994 Buick Century operated by a 46-year-old female from Frankford was exiting the Del-One FCU parking lot, preparing to merge into the southbound travel lanes.
As the Buick was exiting, the Honda approached on the shoulder at a high rate of speed. In an effort to avoid the collision, the driver of the Honda attempted to lay the bike down; however it collided with the right front side of the Buick on the shoulder. The operator of the Buick was able to come to a controlled stop almost immediately. The Honda was redirected and came to rest off of the west side of the roadway. The driver of the Honda came to rest in the right lane of US 113.
The operator of the Buick who was properly restrained, was removed from the scene and transported by EMS to Atlantic General Hospital where she was admitted with minor injuries.
The operator of the Honda was removed from the scene and transported by EMS to Beebe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into the crash. Southbound Dupont Boulevard (US 113), south of Molly Field Road was closed for approximately 3½ hours while the crash was investigated and cleared. No charges have been filed at this time.
Don't like to see anyone die. But when you think it is ok to disregard common sense and logic. Bad things will happen. I have more sympathy for the lady than the guy who is dead.
ReplyDeleteSussex county has to be the most dangerous places to drive, walk or ride a bike. It seems like there's a traffic fatality there every other day!

ReplyDeleteIt's reported. Unlike other agencies their police forces don't hide what is going on.

I think it's the drivers. 90% of all crashes are from driver error, according to agencies that track them.
People drive any kind of way nowadays. Some on purpose. Some by having low skills and some from mistakes.
I am in my mid 50's now and I have noticed a change in my driving as well. Sometimes when I look before entering a roadway I miss things. Or cars drive so fast they appear after I turn to look the other way.
I take that into account and look even more carefully to allow for my aging eyes, slower reflexes, and hopefully any other issue.
I drove professionally for 20 years so I have a bit more experience than those who do not. I/we see a lot out there. We see the crazy actions and maneuvers a lot of small vehicles make. I have seen and been involved with some cars who want to take a big trunk on. Playing daredevil on an interstate highway at interstate highway speeds.
Crossing 4 lanes of active traffic to get to an off-ramp, and the heck with anyone in their way.
I don't know why this guy was on a shoulder on a motorcycle no less going against traffic at high speeds. Sad to say he won't be doing it again. It just goes to show you have to look BOTH ways when entering traffic even if no one is supposed to come toward you, against the law and common sense.
And being it happened in Delaware, I am guessing he wasn't wearing a helmet since he died. Bad decisions. You really have to drive FOR the other guy. Expect them to make mistakes and commit crazy maneuvers because sooner or later they will.
I had an old driver once tell me after I told him about the number of times I see people going by giving me the finger, he said to not even look at people going by. You can't get your feelings hurt and won't get involved in road rage. Hope this helps.
