Mayor Details Salisbury Marathon, Folk Festival Events

SALISBURY – As the Salisbury Marathon and National Folk Festival quickly approaches, officials with the City of Salisbury are asking Wicomico County for support.

Salisbury Mayor Jake Day came before the Wicomico County Council on Tuesday to present plans for two events scheduled to take place in Salisbury next year.

“We wanted to give you sort of some insight into these two rather large events coming to our community …,” he said. “We have a lot of planning ahead of us and a little bit behind us.”

On April 28, the city will host its first annual Salisbury Marathon, a 26.2-mile course that starts in the City Park and ends downtown on the Plaza.

Day said more than 200 participants have already registered for the races and proceeds will benefit Athletes Serving Athletes and Pinwheels for Protection.

From Sept. 7-9, the city will also host its first of three National Folk Festivals. The free event will feature seven stages with continuous performances, crafts, food and more.

Day said as part of the city’s agreement with the National Folk Festival, Salisbury will continue to host a festival of equal or larger size in perpetuity.

“The festival will draw between 100,000 and 200,000 attendees,” he said. “It starts on the low end and rises those three years. Then the legacy festivals often attract more people than that.”

While Day expects the festival to generate economic activity throughout the region, he said the event will come with costs.

“It is not free to put on but it is free to enter,” he said.

  4. What an absolute telling statement.

“We would love and welcome the opportunity to present a united front and say we are all in this together,” he said, “the county, the city, the state, the business community, the philanthropic community.”

Let's present a united front while I am stabbing you in the back.

  5. Culver this moment will make or break your career with wicomico county. Jake day you're an absolute jackass. Do you think maybe just maybe you should have allowed city and county residents decide first if they wanted such events before you committed to them and then basically try and guilt them into participating. I'll say it once again Day you and the few you are affiliated with are a bunch of pansies and need to be pyt out of office and any positions you may hold that influence the rest of the community

  6. Yea, if Culver caves in again, I'll take my chances with Heath.
What would be the difference if Culver can't stand up to the Boy Mayor?

  7. As a resident of Wicomico County I would hope that the County not participate in or spend any monies on this. The City wants it et them foot the bill. There other needs within the County that need to be addressed.

  8. Day how do you go out of your way to screw Culver and wicomico county then smile and act like we're all in this together begging for county help. You truly are an SOB, in your mind thinking you have the county over a barrel literally forcing them to help you, if they don't how it might hurt their county tourism deals and revenues. Day you created this mess and committed to these projects, deal with it. Like you've stated all along its time for Salisbury and wicomico county to be separate entities. Put your big boy pants on and figure out how you're going to fulfill your commitments. You absolutely are a sick man to think you can walk on people the way you have and expect their help. Smile to their face stab them in the back. GOOD CHRISTIAN MAN YOU ARE, NOT!!!

  10. Salisbury, wicomico county you're getting played by Jake day and his entourage. Their words, quotes posted "the crowds get the message's," that's you and I the people they consider suckers, the actual taxpayers, their opinion "the crew gets the miracles". WTF is that Salisbury/wicomico county? You're getting played for a fool

  11. Jake, go pound sand in your are. I hope Culver does nothing but present the City with their Rent bill for the GOB, and REQUIRE the startup of the new Volunteer Fire Company on Snow Hill Road before even the first discussion happens.

With all that paid, signed and in force, then tell Jake uh, NO!

    Bite THIS Jake!

  12. If the County has money for the festival, how about paving my street instead? Pots holes mean more to me than this dumb @ss festival. Use tax money wisely or lose at the voting booth.

  16. and who is going to pay for putting it on?????

  17. Boy mayor needs to go back to school and take basic math again. 720,00 + 400,00 is only 1.12 million. I thought you said you needed 1.35 million. And lets not forget to multiply it by 3. The number of years he has agreed to host said festival. Now Jake how many private donors have ponied up any money yet. NONE! Salisbury can't even raise enough money for forth of July fireworks. Now I know numbers are a liberals worse enemy. That's why our country is 19 trillion dollars in debt. But man your one of the dumbest politicians I've ever seen.

  18. Haven't you people been paying attention? Didn't you watch the County Council meeting? John Cannon is in bed with Jake Day on this. John Cannon is the president of the county council and he sets the agenda so he is the one that invited Jake Day to the meeting. He set Bob Culver up on this to make him look bad in order to shame him into getting the County to buy into that joke. The County should not get involved in this mess and give Jake Day all the glory. Don't do it!
