Council President John Cannon Flip Flops On Volunteer Fire Service

Chief,

In response to your inquiry, as you’re aware, the Wicomico County Council does not authorize or approve where volunteer fire companies operate. That general statement is subject to an exception in the case of the Salisbury Fire District, for which there is an agreement (“Fire Service Agreement”), with which you are familiar, between the City of Salisbury and Wicomico County that was negotiated for the County by the County Executive and approved by the County Council earlier this year.

That said, I believe your organization does have the flexibility, as you suggested, to conduct operations in accordance with “mutual aid” or other agreements that it has with other volunteer fire companies that serve specific areas as agreed among fire chiefs of those companies. This can be authorized without Council approval.

John T. Cannon
President
Wicomico County Council

  6. I think that’s too little too late! Trying to look good while the City sues the Volunteers. Too late to detach yourself now. The people will speak come election time.

  10. And with that said.... Station 1/13 (whatever it is) is back in business and able to run!! Now what will the ISO ratings and insurances look like when a building next to them burns down and the city won’t use them?
