Maryland board waives tuition rule for Amazon employees

ADELPHI, Md. (AP) — To help entice a second Amazon headquarters to Maryland, a state board has voted to waive a 12-month residency requirement to qualify for in-state tuition for any Amazon employees who move to the state, if a new headquarters is established.

The University System of Maryland’s Board of Regents voted to waive the residency rule on Tuesday.

It also would apply to spouses and children of employees at the system’s 12 degree-granting institutions.

Chancellor Robert Caret says the board acted to support Maryland’s economy.

  2. I don't think that would stand up to a legal challenge.

You can't single out a group and give then special status.

  3. Uh, I pay taxes all my life here and we give these these people FREE access to an education here?

Is that like being sold out????

  5. 5:33. Not sure what you mean. Everyone has FREE access to education. The question is whether you pay in-state or out of state rates for that education. No one said the education was FREE.

  6. 5:33 It's evident you didn't take advantage of MD's higher education system.

  7. Bless their hearts! They will give Amazon employees the same benefits that they give to illegal non-citizens. Isn't that special?

Maryland? Ha Ha, never happen. Land and labor too expensive in the metro area, and labor under educated in the rural areas. MD would like to have them, but Amazon wants nothing to do with the new murder capital and BLM. Our legislators should concentrate on the reasons why Amazon isn't attracted to MD. It's not because Amazon employees wouldn't get in-state tuition for 12 months after they move here. Heck, their employees already are educated, or they wouldn't have gotten a interview. No Amazon employee would be relocated to MD, if they were not management status, and they are the most educated ones in the company.
