U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown announces plans for a bill to punish hate speech at universities

U.S. Rep. Anthony Brown announced during a speech Thursday afternoon that he plans to introduce a bill he hopes will curtail hate speech at universities.

If passed, the bill would require universities and colleges to demonstrate they have programs and initiatives in place that clearly define to students "what is acceptable speech and what is not acceptable speech," Brown (D-Md.) said to a room of roughly 150 people at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center.

For institutions that might lack the necessary resources to create these programs, the bill would set aside grant money to "take away any excuse," Brown said.

The bill would also push universities to report hate crimes to local law enforcement. While existing laws require universities to report hate crime data, Brown said many schools don't comply, which has led to underreporting.

  3. Looks like another attack on freedom of speech disguised has hate speech or political correctness. What they are doing needs to be called out for what it is. Even if you disagree with what someone says or believes, it should be protected under the constitution for their right of free speech, even if it is considered offensive to some.

  4. Who decides what is and what isn't?

Who can stop a speech in progress, and for what reasons?

Can a license to assemble be refused based upon an assumption that the organization or group will be presenting hate speech?
