Update from the NHC as of 5pm: IRMA BECOMES A CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE OVER THE EASTERN ATLANTIC
At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Irma was located near latitude 17.3 North, longitude 34.8 West. Irma is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). This motion is expected to continue today, followed by a westward turn on Saturday, and a west-southwestward motion by Sunday.
Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Irma is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Fluctuations in strength, both up and down, are possible, but Irma is expected to remain a powerful hurricane for several days.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has just updated its forecast for what it is now referring to as a "rapidly intensifying" Category 2 hurricane in the Eastern Atlantic ocean and the results look disastrous for a large swath of the Caribbean and Southeastern United States. Here is a brief summary of Hurricane Irma from the National Hurricane Center released at 11AM EST:
More
This is currently a very small storm. it has strong winds, but only about 30 miles from the center. And tropical storm winds on 60 miles from the center. That is very small for a hurricane. This is much to much publicity for this storm at a point where it's 1000 miles from any land. And likely, from recent guidance, to turn north northwest and go out out sea.

ReplyDelete1:16- No, the eclipse was the moon passing in between the Earth and the Sun. Your type of fear mongering went out of fashion over 200 years ago! You can relax, my friend.

ReplyDeleteWhat would Al Gore do?
ReplyDeletenever too much publicity for any hurricane especially since we have entered the time when they are most prevalent. An ounce of prevention > pound of cure.
ReplyDeleteTime for 1:16 to read a different book or three.
ReplyDelete1:05 I agree - The European weather follower apparently does a better job on prediction than American. Even FOX and Friends weather gal, Janice Dean, has stated that many times. So I'll watch and go in panic mode nearer to next weekend if i need too. my pantry is stocked but I usually do a Weds grocery run, so will replenish whatever is required.

I hope the military will save us from this storm using weather modification techniques which are proven to steer hurricanes out of the path of populations. Ionosphere heaters are really effective weapons of weather modification. I'm cheering for them to use the technology for the good of all of us.
ReplyDelete1:59 What part of the atmosphere is the Ionosphere? Answer: Niether. Science fiction isn't real. Site your source.
