Cummings Renews Fight for a Harriet Tubman $20 Bill

WASHINGTON — The fight to put Harriet Tubman on the face of the $20 bill by 2020 has been revived with the introduction of bipartisan legislation in the House co-sponsored by Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Baltimore.

“Too often, our nation does not do enough to honor the contributions of women in American history, especially women of color,” Cummings said. “I am proud to introduce this bill with Rep. (John) Katko (R-N.Y.) to honor Harriet Tubman’s role in making America a more free and more equal society.”

The bill comes almost 17 months after then-Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced that Tubman, a famous Underground Railroad abolitionist who was born as a Maryland slave, would replace Andrew Jackson as the face of the $20 bill.

Lew’s department pledged support to putting women on American currency through changes to the $5 and $10 bills as well.

  3. Ok. Harriet Tubman is a "hero" of the Civil War, right?
So isn't creating a memorial to her racist? Why are we removing/destroying everything else related to the war but honoring her??

  17. I tell you what Mr Cummings. Pay the $800000.00 you owe in back property taxes and maybe we'll think about it.

  18. This woman was DIRECTLY involved with slavery. We don't need a $20 bill to remind us every day about slavery. It would be repulsive.

  19. This woman was a criminal, she broke the law. She didn't agree with the law, and violated it. "Granted, many agreed with her" but still it was the law, valid till repealed.
Should we build monuments to Abortion Clinic Bombers? They are disregarding a law they don't agree with.

  22. If it does happen, there is an underground movement to deface every $20 the members get with the "N" word stamped on them. Forcing the Bureau of engraving and printing to remake millions of bills costing much money!
Very cheap to deface the bills, just a black perminate marker!

  23. Seriously! Do we need that scraggly old looking criminal. This woman murdered white people who got in her way to steal these slaves.

This is exactly what ANTIFA and Black Lives Matters wants us to do. She is not a President and she isn't presidential material.

    I say HELL NO!
