Devastating images show houses flattened and rescuers digging for bodies following the Great Galveston Hurricane.
The Category 4 hurricane, with winds of up to 145 mph, made landfall on September 8, 1900 killing at least 8,000 of its 37,000 residents and destroying more than 3,600 buildings.
My people lived on the hill overlooking Johnstown Pa when the dam broke.Those who were financially better off lived in the city down below.My grandmother was 8 & while standing on the hill looking down recalled that the wooden structures were collapsing just barely in advance of the wave of water.No one at the time believed her until other surviving witnesses told the same story.The water came through with so much force that the cushion of air forced by the water was sufficient to knock down buildings!That cleanup and rebuild took years.
Obviously they would have had climate change going on then, too, with all the damage that took place. All that man made stuff going on in the late 1800's screwed up the climat....
there is an excellent book called "Isaac's Storm" written about this event. Highly recommend reading it.

ReplyDeleteYeah! Or government handouts, or national flood insurance, or FEMA? The more modern our society gets the more helpless the citizens become.
