Roughly 20 Irish students in Ocean City on J-1 visas found themselves looking for shelter two weeks ago after they were evicted from downtown Ocean City apartments for exceeding city government’s maximum occupancy rule.
“We were joking the other day that if there was a fire, we’d die because there was furniture and suitcases everywhere,” said Aoife Kennelly, a 21-year-old student. “We used to bring people in and have a laugh, ‘look at how small our apartment is.’ We thought apartments here were supposed to be that small.”
Kennelly and her friends, Cliona O’Callaghan and Leah O’Keefe, were among the dozens of Irish students living in an apartment complex on St. Louis Avenue. The trio said they found the apartment through online advertisements, where it was advertised as being able to accommodate seven to nine people.

In the Navy on a ship they put 6 people in a 60 sq.ft. area.
ReplyDeleteThe landlord knew better. The law says that he has to find housing for displaced tenants that is at least comparable to the original in amenities and price. It looks like he's still needing to finish the job.

ReplyDeleteThat would be seven small people, or nine leprechauns.
Three on the lease, and twenty living there. Sounds like some of the section 8 housing I see around here.

Of course, although the landlord had to know the law (occupancy AND fire code), and if not, had to be able to do some basic math, as in, "why are 15 people paying me rent when I only advertised for half that number?? Oh my. Maybe I should at least give them a discount, huh?" I hope my insurance company doesn't know about this.....
ReplyDeleteF no. That is probably a quote.
And he should be prosecuted.
