Maryland State Trooper Charged In DUI-Related Crash

(CECILTON, MD) – A Maryland state trooper has been charged and is suspended following his involvement yesterday in a DUI-related traffic crash in Cecil County.

The trooper is identified as Trooper First Class Tanner Nickerson, who is assigned to the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. He is charged with driving under the influence, driving while impaired, failure to control speed to avoid a collision, reckless driving and negligent driving.

Shortly after 9:00 p.m. yesterday, Maryland State Police from the North East Barrack responded to a call for a traffic crash in the 200-block of North Bohemia Ave. (Rt. 213) in Cecilton, Md. Troopers found a Mercedes passenger car and a marked Maryland State Police Chevrolet Tahoe involved.

The preliminary investigation indicates TFC Nickerson, who was off-duty, was northbound on Rt. 213, when he failed to reduce speed and ran into the back of the Mercedes, which was also northbound. The 49-year-old female driver of the Mercedes, from Cherry Hill, NJ, and her 10-year-old passenger were taken to Union Hospital by ambulance. They were treated for what were reported to be minor injuries. The trooper reported no injuries.

Upon contacting TFC Nickerson at the scene of the crash, the investigating trooper detected indications of possible impairment. Further investigation led to the arrest of TFC Nickerson on the scene. He was taken to the North East Barrack for processing and, after receiving traffic citations, was later released to a sober driver.

Witnesses told troopers the emergency lights on the police vehicle were activated. The investigation determined the trooper was off-duty and was not responding to a call.

In addition to the charges being placed against him, TFC Nickerson was suspended with pay, as is Maryland State Police procedure. He has been a member of the Maryland State Police for six years.

The investigation is continuing.

  4. Nothing will happen to him, back to work with a slap on the wrist and not a penny of pay lost. No court, no tickets, no record, no fines, no AA, no nothing.

    Two sets of rules.

    1. I think it is pretty standard. If found guilty he will most likely have to pay back the salary from the time of suspension.

  7. Strong work on arresting troopers part to do the right thing in a tough spot that he was put into by a very stupid decision. Should be fired and forced to pay for damages!

  8. Just like the one that flipped his truck over on Superbowl weekend in Marion. He was drunk and drugged up but like the other commenters said there was no court, no trial, and he was back to work like nothing happened. These internal investigations are a joke and yes there are two justice systems. One for us and one for them.

  9. It is policy. If they do it to one they have to do it for all, until they find grounds to suspend without pay. He is not the first one to do this. But he did activate his emerg. lights to warn people to get out of his way. lol

  15. All those charges and he was released without having to post bail? That is certainly special treatment for one of their own.
