Since I was there I'd like to set the record straight on this. This was a young woman who just wanted to walk out on the beach to see the ocean after 20+ years of being away from her hometown of MD. The separated part is not exactly accurate. Her parents went up to the room to bed ahead of her never thinking she wouldn't return after a quick walk on the beach. When she did not return after 15-20 minutes they went looking for her. Apparently some stupid human being dug a 5 foot hole and left it. It was dark, she didn't see it and fell in and couldn't get out! Sand starts to cave in when you try to claw at it to get out people! Then the tractors, for whatever reason, didn't see her and buried her alive. The autopsy has revealed no drugs, she was not passed out nor was she sleeping!!! The ones at fault here are whoever felt the need to dig a 5 foot hole and leave it, and the beach tractor drivers for not looking in the hole before pushing sand in to fill it!!! Her family is devastated and now have to bury their daughter, sister, Aunt, and wife so please have some respect and stop with the negative comments people. On behalf of her parents I beg you!!!!
I used to dig holes all the time as a kid in OC but my parents always taught me to fill them back in so no one got hurt. All around tragedy.
ReplyDeleteIm sure it wasn't done intentionally but maybe people will be more careful to fill them in now
DeleteHorrific,so sorry for y'all lost! Are heart's are broken in Maryland.
DeleteI'm so terribly sorry for your loss. Such a tragedy. Keeping you and your family in my prayers❤
DeleteAbsolute tragedy! I hope your family can find peace.
DeleteI just want to say from my self a delawaren I'm so very sorry for this tragedy this is so sad, I'm sending loving and healing prayers ur way to the parents, wife, friends and family. I will keep you all in my prayers .
DeleteIm so sorry for your loss. People need to get the facts instead of assuming. They need to realize she was someone's child, sister, wife, aunt and friend. Put yourself in these people's shoes and think how those negative remarks your making would affect you. People are way to quick to judge someone they don't know on rumors not facts. Again I'm so sorry for your loss, my thoughts and prayers are with u all.
Deleteso sorry for your family! prayers!
DeleteSo sorry for your family's loss!
DeleteSo sorry for your loss, prayers coming your way.
DeleteI pray for you all to find peace. Such tragedy....so sorry
DeleteGod bless. I'm so sorry for her family and friends. This is horribly sad and tragic.
DeleteMy prayers and thoughts are with you and her family.
ReplyDeleteThis is so very sad, condolences to her family. What a beautiful young lady.
ReplyDeleteI apologize to you, her family and her friends on behalf of my lesser human beings in this area. May she R.I.P. and all of you be comforted in your time of grief.
ReplyDeleteThis was entirely reckless on both the hole digger and the tractor driver.
I am truly sorry for your loss. It was totally unnecessary and avoidable.
Ur not suppose to be on beach after dark anyways
DeleteCORRECT. And the talk of reckless on tractor driver is WRONG.
DeleteThe bottom line is.... this was a tragic accident and someone lost there life and out of respect for her family and friends who are grieving like no one will ever know are just wanting people to know what really happened. I have walked the beach at night and probably after I have had a few drinks. this is all just so sad for her and her family. My sympathy goes out to all who know and loved her
DeleteYou never been on the beach at dark? Please. Your ignorance to someones death is wrong. Going to the beach in a few weeks and absolutely my husband and I will be taking a stroll on the beach at night!! How can you be so heartless? Someone died, a human. Someone who just wanted so damn fresh air and to breath in the ocean water. Both of you are WRONG. Let's not talk about someone or something else being wrong when your ignorance is the truth of wrong....
DeleteGreat sympathy here folks. It was a tragic accident that if people were more observant, could have been avoided had they been more thoughtful or observant. FYI the beach hours are until 10:30
DeleteMay you all find peace and comfort. This was beyond tragic and my thoughts and prayers are with all you!
Deletei am so sorry for your loss God Bless the family!
DeleteNegativity towards this family has to stop. This is a tragic loss. I feel sorry for those driving the beach equipment also, can you imagine the guilt they must feel?
DeleteUnless it is a private beach or one on a state park, beaches do not have curfews.. They're open to crab hunters and night fisherman, as well as those who just enjoy the beach at night..
DeleteSo when your in OC next week you are planning on taking a walk with your husband right after the bars close at 2:00am on 2nd street?? Hope one of you are packing!
DeleteSo sorry for your family's loss. Prayers for all Affected !! 😢
DeleteThe beaches do have curfews. Crabbers are usually not on the beach, but on a boat - which is not 'the beach'. Either way, everyone has strolled the beach at night. She didn't do anything 'wrong'. The wrong was the sand hole that was left unfilled. That was the real problem and the cause of this tragedy. I'm wondering if the people who made that hole realize they were directly involved in this. They will have to live with it for the rest of their lives while this young woman and their family suffer as a result.
Deleteyou are so ignorant. smh
DeleteCurfew is 10pm. This still could have happened at 9:30pm. Holes should not be left in the beach and the driver should have looked before covering the hole.
DeleteIt is incorrect that you can't be on the beach after dark. There have NEVER been signs posted stating to stay off the beach after dark. Get your facts straight you heartless human. What you should do is fill in your holes when you dig during the day because...wait for it.....people like to stroll on the beach after dark.
DeleteSo sorry for the families loss! What an awful tragedy regardless of how it happened and whos fault it is. People hopefully will be more aware of leaving a large hole unfilled.
DeleteSec. 106-113. - Occupying beaches prohibited during certain hours.
DeleteIt shall be unlawful for any person, other than police and maintenance personnel, to be on the beaches of Ocean City for any reason from the hours of 12:00 midnight of one day to 5:00 a.m. of the following day.
They prefer you not being on the beach after 10 and from 10 to 6am their is a no sleeping on the beach rule, it doesn't not say no walking on the beach. She did nothing wrong. Many people go night fishing. This goes up the eastern shore coast to include the DE beaches which have 24 hour surf fishing beaches, etc so it is not uncommon for people to be out on the beach after dark. The fault goes to the hole digger and cleaning equipment (I'm sure they have a lot of guilt) It is a tragic loss and I pray for peace and comfort for the family as they have to endure the pain of burying a young loved one.
DeleteThis poor woman did nothing wrong unless she was on the beach after midnight. It's a tragedy.
DeleteOcean City Beach Rules and Regulations
Prohibited by City Ordinance
Consuming alcoholic beverages
Dogs on the beach or boardwalk (May 1 - Sept. 30)
Sleeping on the beach between 10pm - 6am
No one is allowed on the beach or in the ocean between 12am and 5am
Using a skim board between 10am - 5:30pm
Bringing glass containers on the beach
Fires or cooking on the beach at any time
Regulated by Beach Patrol
Playing loud music
Playing ball, flying kites, or other thrown or flying objects
Digging holes on the beach that are deeper than knee deep due to cave-in and suffocation
Not on the beach after dark? What Puritan beach do you go to? To my knowledge, OCMD has no curfew. The only beach with a curfew, in the area, is Rehoboth (12 AM -5 AM). The law was put in place to prevent drunk people from drowning. The bottom line is that tragedy struck, it was carelessness that lead to it, and it was completely avoidable. The first two (2) to reply are complete jackholes (probably the hole digger and tractor driver).
DeleteR.I.P on behalf of all of us real humans
I can understand the anger on about the allegations of the condition she was In and It's very unfortunate on how she died. Definitely a very Isolated Incident, but by no means should the beach combers driving the trucks be blamed. I've done It before and there still hard to see. So let this person R.I.P. and don't blame the wrong people. Thanks
DeleteSympathy to the family! To all the a-holes and know it all's posting their 2 cents it's ridiculous to blame this or that or question "rules". Bottom line someone lost a life!! It's against the law to drink and drive yet people do it every day and innocent people pay for their stupidity. We've all broken the "rules" and worse sometimes the law. Whatever the details are does not make her death any less tragic!! To UNKNOWN above have you EVER been to ocean city md? There are signs at every street saying the Hours the beach is OPEN!!! So get your facts straight please!!!!! Regardless of what these signs say people are going to continue to be on the beach at night. I wouldn't go alone is the only thing I would recommend (that is for several reasons). Again my deepest sympathies to Ashley's family. ❤️ Please know most Marylanders do have ❤️ And are sympathetic to your loss.
DeleteThe beach is always open!!!!!
Deletemessed that up. My head got ahead of my fingers. The tractor driver should not be blamed. If she was trying to get out and buried herself, the driver would not have seen her. I hope he/she gets the counseling needed to deal with this.
DeleteAnonymousAugust 4, 2017 at 11:41 AM
DeleteUr not suppose to be on beach after dark anyways
Who says you are not supposed to be on the beach after dark you stupid MORON!! Show me that F'n law!
If there was a hole on the beach and the life guards did nothing about it then the city of Ocean City is at fault. I may be wrong, but I think they have a rule of not digging holes no more than knee deep. Regardless if that rule is on the books or not there should be NO DIGGING on the beaches in Ocean City at any time, PERIOD!! Anyone caught digging holes on the beach should be charged with a hefty fine. If it's a child, then the parents are responsible.
DeleteI have seen to many people die, especially children, because of these holes and to continue to allow them to be dug is criminal.
AnonymousAugust 4, 2017 at 1:48 PM

The beaches do not have curfews. I get sick and tired of these dumb a$$ comments from ignorant people. Even if there was a curfew do you think it would have saved a life. Hell no!
"Digging holes on the beach that are deeper than knee deep due to cave-in and suffocation"
DeleteThere you go. I knew there was a regulation about digging holes knee deep. No this needs to be amended to reflect NO Digging at all.
Prayers for the family.
ReplyDeleteAnd There You Have It ..The Rest Of The Story ! My condolences !!
ReplyDeleteI am truly sorry for your loss and hope God will comfort you in your time of loss and I will pray for all of you
ReplyDeleteMy Dad was on the beach house patrol, and every trip to the beach we filled any holes dug, ours and other peoples. The danger of collapse or broken ankles and legs, on people and the horses is real. You never think an incident like this could occur. Very sorry for the families' loss.
ReplyDeletePrayers for peace and comfort in this tragic time.
ReplyDeleteRIP such a sad sad story. May go be with the rest of the family.
ReplyDeleteI am saddened for the senseless loss of a beautiful person. My condolences go out to her wife her parents and and family and friends. And my the person or persons that left the hole my your soul/s be toutured for your lack of respect and caring for others safety.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for your loss and pray for peace, love and understanding through this time
DeletePrayers for you and your family
DeleteI am so sorry. Of course a 30 year old should be able to go out without their parents. She's so beautiful.
DeleteHow compassionate of u to wish torture on someone who may have not been familiar with a beach or the dangers. Probably some kids. Smh... how about wishing awareness & increased responsibility?
DeleteWhat a tragic accident. Our lifeguards try to make everyone aware of the dangers with the hole digging and there are signs on their chairs about it, but a lot of times it happens after they are off duty-we see it all the time. The person driving the beach cleaner obviously did not see her as those machines are quite large. The whole thing is just tragic. I pray for her family and friends, such a hard thing to go through-she was a beautiful lady.
DeleteWow how can u wish torture on someone who im sure did not intend for someone to be killed. I Pray that you realize how ugly ur heart is for wishing that on someone (probably a child). Praying for everyone involved in this horrible accident
DeleteI am so sorry for her entire family & friend's loss. If anything can come out of this I hope it is: Everyone, man, woman, child need to make sure the holes are filled in. I never allow my kids to dig deep holes because of the chance of air pockets. I don't care if you are leaving the beach and come across the hole or see people leaving & they didn't fill in the hole, tell them! Take a little extra time & fill it in! PLEASE, PLEASE this can not happen to another family again. Just take a little extra time to save someone else!
ReplyDeleteNO THEY DON'T NEED TO MAKE SURE HOLES ARE FILLED IN!! They need to stop digging holes on the beach at any time. Make it a criminal offense. Quit selling those damn cheap $5 shovels and buckets on the beach. One to many people have died in Ocean City because of these sand traps. Ocean City is responsible for this death. Yes that means you RICHARD W. (Rick) MEEHAN, Mayor, LLOYD MARTIN, Council President, MARY KNIGHT, Council Secretary Cell Phone: 443-235-0326, DENNIS DARE, Council Member, TONY DeLUCA, Council Member Cell Phone: 410-524-4243, JOHN GEHRIG JR., Council Member, WAYNE HARTMAN, Council Member Cell Phone: 443-235-4406, MATT JAMES, Council Member Cell Phone: 443-235-4407. Now the cowards like the Mare has not made public their cell phone numbers. Call them and raise Hell with them about these deadly holes.
DeleteYou're lying. Toxicology results take weeks. Not two days.
ReplyDeleteYea that's what I thought
DeleteIt doesn't matter what the toxicology report says ... This deep hole should have never been dug that deep and certainly should have been filled in before the diggers left the beach. There are a few people sitting at home right now thinking OMG we dug that hole. They should be sending money to help that family get through this tragedy.
DeleteYour an idiot. Tell that to officer when he gives you a breathalyzer test. If your involved in an accident and transported to a hospital and they draw blood it can be tested within hours.
Delete^^^you're the idiot. Medical Examiner does a full toxicology screen, which takes weeks.
DeletePlease... this family lost someone they love and cherish!!! There is no need to be rude. How on Earth would you know anything about this person if you are not family? Some toxicology reports only take days while others could take months. If you have nothing nice to say then just dont say anything at all.
DeleteRegardless of the toxicology the hole should have been filled in. Even if she had been drinking, she's allowed. She wasn't driving. She was walking on the beach!
DeleteYou're an insensitive idiot!!!
DeleteMy heart and condolences go out to the young lady and her family and friends. I am so sorry for your loss.
DeleteA simple toxicology measure such as urine being retrieved from the bladder and dipped would allow the medical examiner to know if further screening or testing for drug levels is even necessary...and are you assholes seriously still ranting and putting in your internet based 2 cents about a grieving family members statement...you are disgusting individuals..how would you feel if the role was reversed and this was your statement..it could happen to anyone. This is so very sad.
DeleteHow does whether or not she had anything in her system matter? There was a hole on the beach either not covered up or not covered to the fullest. How many times do you walk on the boardwalk and see kids running and playing in the sand? Even at night time? This could've been a child!! Oh wait- it was, a daughter, an aunt, a sister,a friend...ignorance is bliss, have a heart
DeleteI agree. A family lost a loved one. Who cares about a toxicology report. It was a tragedy. She certainly didn't expect to fall in a hole while walking on the beach. Deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this young lady.
DeleteMy aunt is a medical examiner and on certain circumstances things can take usually up to 4 days so if this person was examined on the day of or even the day after there is definitely a chance that they have the tox ology report and it didn't just happen 2 days ago but for whatever reason you people think that this matters it doesn't because the person is already gone this family has already lost her family so both of you idiots need to quit worrying about when it happened how it happened what the truth is and let this family grieve find something else or someone else to argue with about something that doesn't matter like what you wore yesterday because someone else thought it was ugly get a life!!!
DeleteI can tell you now yes a full report takes weeks but taking blood and doing a drug screen dose not I mean for God sake ppl you can buy drug screen kits at local drug stores iv watched them dip a stick in pee and get results basic but results within 1 minute and if you think you can get out of a 5 ft. Sand hole even sober with no help go try it wouldn't have mattered but either way drug test take time when they find positive drug what takes time is pinpointing which drug exactly so u ppl really ate ignorant and just horrible for even speaking on something so devastating especially when you ate WRONG ! SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR FAMILY MEMBER AND FRIEND!
DeleteDoes any of this really matter. She was a person with family and friends who love her. For any of you to judge is ridiculous and heartbreaking for the family. I am so sorry for your lost. I am ten months in to losing my son and I know how very hard this is. Take care of yourselves.
DeleteEveryone that thinks it takes weeks for it to come back your wrong. It only takes a couple of days . It normally takes the family a. Couple weeks to get it but the police have it within 48 hours when it come to something like this
DeleteAnonymousAugust 4, 2017 at 10:47 AM
DeleteRegardless of the toxicology the hole sh
NO!! The Damn hole should have never been dug!
I am so sorry to hear about your loved one. I am sure the tractor guy or gal must feel horrible about this incident. It get's so dark on the beach and I am sure they didn't see the hole or her. It is just a horrible tragedy. May your loved one Rest In Peace and may your family find comfort in knowing that so many people do care and are sending many prayers their way.
ReplyDeleteI teach my little kids to fill in holes when we surf fish. I've seen sprained ankles, torn knees, and damaged vehicles from even a 12"hole. May need a policy change for the maintenance workers on the beach so this never happens again. Granted, they probably never thought anyone would be in that hole at night, so it was probably unintentionaland I'm sure whoever was driving the tractor is probably horrified knowing this happened.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss and prayers to you all.
Carla, (and others) While it's been a while, I recall 2 or 3 tractors riding side by side at night cleaning the beach. I'll add, the lights they use are very bright and blinding, so they can easily see where they're going.
ReplyDeleteYes I know someone who was working on the beach on that st and they had it called in.. I think its just an excuse there using that the tractor people covered her up.... it's sad but don't blame someone to cover up the true story
DeleteSorry this happened but I am sure the driver of the beach tractor did not see her or the hole. If this is in fact the truth the driver has to live with the fact that he is in part responsible for her unintended death.
ReplyDeleteHow does anyone know if the driver could see her? Perhaps she was not visible because the sand was on her. I pity the driver for being blamed. The hole diggers are more at fault. I still find it hard to believe that she simply fell in and couldn't get out. It just seems strange.
DeleteSo sad....prayers to the family. No one should ever judge or stay negative comments without knowing the facts. SAS we love in a world of judgemental & rude people. Respect for the family.
ReplyDeleteToxicology reports take two weeks.
ReplyDeleteexactly
DeleteSeriously, it foesnt matter if she was intoxicated. She was walking along a beach. It's done and overwith. They should have filled the hole before they left. A life was lost. N all u care about is a toxicology report. Pathetic.
DeleteI'm sorry for your loss. Prayers to you n your family.
I'm a medical examiner and depending on the circumstances it only takes at the least 2days. So it is possible to get rapid results. But the timing of the toxicology report shouldn't matter. A mother, daughter, aunt, sister is still gone. RIP and prayers to the family
DeleteWhew, thats a really deep hole, 5ft...how can someone dig that deep, what a shame...
ReplyDeleteI'm just wonder how someone got out of a five foot hole and she couldn't??
DeleteThoughts and prayers to you all!
ReplyDeleteMy idiot b-inlaw did that same thing in OC last year. dug a hole and left it open.looks like we need another law to protect us from dumbasses like this. Sorry for your families loss.
ReplyDeleteI was actually wondering if this is "negligent homicide". Maybe CTV cameras can determine the cretins who left the hole there and the family can bring a civil suit. It doesn't bring back their loved one but it could save someone else's life in the future. My deepest condolences to the family.
DeleteAnd maybe the cameras can determain why a female was walking alone on a crime ridden drug infested part of the Ocean City Beach at 2:00am? Who abandoned her and allowed her to do this?
DeleteI am thinking by the looks of those giant tractors and the surface they cover, a hole would be a dot in the area that the equipment is used to cover it up. Being a farmer that has hours on equipment, I would not go blaming the driver(s). Does anyone think a driver would do such a tragic incident on purpose. Condolences to all.
ReplyDeleteMy deepest sympathy to the entire family. This is a tragic matter no matter how you look at it.
ReplyDeleteHow sad and tragic on so many levels! Losing a loved one is so heartbreaking, but to have to deal with negativity & ugliness is devistating! Praying that you find peace in your loving memories.
ReplyDeleteI need to clarify my earlier comment. While the lights are very bright and the tractors do sit up high, I, by no means, ever meant to imply a driver was anywhere near at fault here. I can only imagine how horrible that entire crew feels about this, let alone the driver. My hope and prayer is that they didn't find out until later that a body was found so NO ONE actually knows who cleared that exact area.
ReplyDeleteAll that being said, Ocean City, (and all other beaches nation wide) need to create legislation making it illegal to dig holes deeper then 2 feet. This will forever eliminate any more unfortunate situations like this again. It's a no brainer. Get It Done Ocean City, SET THE BAR!
more laws is not the answer, next we'll just make it illegal to go on the beach at night...
DeleteThey have regulations that state the holes dug should only be knee high of the smallest person in your group. Just somehow needs to be enforced, there's so many hours where it's unattended by life guards.
DeleteThe beach patrol tells people not to dig big/drop holes and to fill the ones the do dig no matter how big or small. Furthermore you are not supposed to be in the beach after dark. She should have never gone on the beach after dark by herself. I'm sorry for this familys loss that could've been avoided in so many ways.
DeleteThere is a regulation that state only as high as the smallest person in your group
DeleteI live on 11th street and the lifeguards diligently keep an eye on the holes being dug. The problem is there are hours after they leave that families go to play in the sand and holes are dug.
DeleteThey have signs posted about not being able to dig a hole any deeper than the knee of the shortest person with your group, but people do it anyways. A lot of times it happens after lifeguard hours. Just like using the crosswalks, OC has spent tons of money on crosswalks on pretty much every corner and I still see people running across the highway in between streets all the time! Some people ignore warnings about anything and everything and unfortunately tragic things happen like this that could've been avoided. So sad
DeleteNo Joe, the only way this is going to stop is to create legislation to stop digging any holes at all. They all ready have rule that you can't dig holes more than knee deep. Who's knees? That's around 2 feet anyway. The only way to stop this is to make it illegal to dig any holes. You can't go to the city park and dig holes so why should you be able to dig holes at the beach?
DeleteRegardless of any situation she did not deserve what happened to her, and for people to attack her when her family is going through this time losing their child. People today really make me sick. My apologies for the rant but she deserves to leave with dignity and be treated with respect. My prayers are with the family.

ReplyDelete10:11 AM what a stupid comment. No one said he did it on purpose.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, make stuff up so you can hear yourself talk.
So sad! May Gods love bring you peace & comfort during this difficult time.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for your loss
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts and prayers are with this family. I cannot imagine how hard it is to go on a vacation and have to go home without someone. This was a horrible, horrible accident. May God be with your family and comfort you in your grief.
ReplyDeleteI am so very sorry for the loss of your loved one. What a terrible tragedy.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts and prayers are with this family. Taken too soon. I wish that we can turn back the hands of time and undo things such as this. It is sad and humbling. You NEVER know when your time is up.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss.my prayers go out to her hold family.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness I am so very sorry that this happened to this young woman and am sending prayers to all involved in the tragedy May God give you peace and understanding has all of you go through this sad time
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
ReplyDeleteSorry
I am so sorry for your family's loss. My heart hurts for you.
ReplyDeleteSuch a Terrible Tragedy ...
ReplyDeleteCondolences to Her Family...
God Bless ... Rest in Peace
We can all learn from this. Many are affected by this, first the family who lost this young woman. Sorry for such a tragic loss. For those who drive the tractors and those who dig on the beach, they had no plan for this to happen and we all need to leave this alone.
ReplyDeleteYes ALL can learn from this. Don't let your loved one, or yourself, walk the beach alone at 2:00 in the morning after the bars close in a drug and crime infested part of the Ocean City Beach.
DeleteI am truly very sorry for your loss. Such a tragedy. I was just there on Saturday..i wanted to go out walking on the beach that night. My daughter said no it was to dark to see. Scary..and your right fill the hole back up. Especially that big. God bless your family.
ReplyDeletewhole thing makes no sense. 5 ft hole would have hit water if made on beach, unless so close to boardwalk, then someone would have heard her shouting for help. Unless she fell in and was knocked out cold and then tractors cleaned beach and went over hole. If 5ft deep, it would have to be super wide as well to get a shovel down. And she would have had to walk UP a mound of sand to go down into the hole (the sand from that hole had to go somewhere.) I feel sorry for the family because they probably will never get the full truth. But blaming the tractor drivers is wrong. If they weren't there doing there job, the beach would be a dump because people don't throw their trash away or trash gets blown from boardwalk. Its not the responsibility of the tractor people when the sign clearly say to not to be on the beach between 10pm and 6am.
ReplyDeleteHow tall was she? Most adults are over 5 ft. so she should have been able to climb out. Sadly, I think that you may be correct that she was knocked unconscious. So sad. RIP.
DeleteI was thinking similar things as well. Like how does this person know how deep the hole was when she fell in? She was alone on the beach in the middle of the night. They also claim that she was not passed out or sleeping. Either this person was with her on the beach or is just assuming this is how it happened. Regardless though it is still very sad that someone had to suffer any of this happening. This is why when I go to the Ocean City I never let my friends go off on their own.
DeleteThe young lady was found because her forearm and hand were sticking out of the sand. With that being said, the driver of the tractor had to see some part of her, if he/she was looking directly at the sand prior to the tractor riding over it. The driver may have taken their eye off of things for a moment, who knows. But, I can't imagine how that driver feels and the guilt that person will carry. Just like the people that dug that hole and left it, they have to live with that guilt because they were reckless in leaving such a big hole in the sand. The lights on those tractors are blinding. They are that bright for a reason, so that the drivers do not hit anyone and can see what they are riding over. There would also be light shining from the Boardwalk, and the hole had to be closer to the Boardwalk than the water. If the hole was closer to the water, then the hole would've hit water before 5 feet. If you have grown up in MD and/or know anything about Ocean City, people walk the beach at all hours. The beach patrol will only stop if they think you are asleep on the beach. It is a terrible tragedy all around, but don't point the finger at the victim. Respect the fact that someone lost their life. There were a couple of factors as to what happened to her, but she did nothing wrong. The hole should not have been left and the driver should have been able to see part of the young lady. God Bless you and your family, and many prayers for all of you.
DeleteWhy would you make a dumb A$$ comment like that?? You have no proof that digging 5 foot hole on the beach would lead to water. You idiots need to quit making stupid comments because people believe your Fake News.
DeleteSorry this happened. It is not the drivers fault...sure he never expected someone to be in a 5 foot hole in the sand. Guess now they will need to stop at every hole and look in. Who in their right mind would dig a hole that deep anyway. Very Sad!
ReplyDeleteWas a missing person report filed with the police department that night.
ReplyDeleteLooks like snowflake Justin Beeber !!
ReplyDeleteWow love all the support and love Pouring in, may God look down on her loved ones and give them Strength. 💖
ReplyDeleteMy heart goes out to you and your family. what a beautiful young woman and an artist. what a horrible way to die why do people dig those holes it should be banned i know it has happened at several other beaches. my deepest deepest sympathy and prayers that you one day find peace. and the person who allowed their kid or themselves to dig it realizes it was them and carry this on them the rest of their lives
ReplyDeleteSorry for the family loss, sending prayers to all. But the way things be happening she should had never went out at 2am in the morning drunk by herself to start with, on the beach nobody there bu her. Shouldnt had happen, so ppl create their own nightmare
ReplyDeleteWho said she was drunk. This young lady just wanted to take a walk on the beach, almost everyone has done it. It's beautiful smelling the air and feeling the breeze. I've seen people playing sports, surfing, walking, swimming all hours on the beach. Your on vacation enjoying yourself not realizing a idiot would have dug a 5ft hole in the sand. This young lady lost her life while enjoying her trip, may she rest in peace, prayers to her family and friends
DeleteReal smart being out there alone after 2:00am just after the bars close in a drug and crime infested part of Ocean City.
DeletePrayers for her family
ReplyDeleteI am sorry Bro, its def a tragedy, God Bless and Rest this young Lady.
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad my condolences to the family
ReplyDeleteI am so very sorry for this horrible accident. But the tractor driver is not to blame. No one is supposed to be on the beach in OC by city ordinance between the hours of 10pm and 5am for the purposes of beach cleaning. The tractor operator was doing his/her job, and how WOULD he/she see her if she was down in a 5 foot hole that had collapsed around her. I am sure the OC employee is beside themselves with guilt, and they will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. BUT, it was an accident all around. No need to play the blame game.
ReplyDeleteBy city ordinance no one should be digging holes in the sand 5ft deep either, this accident would probably never had happened. I am sure if you go to the beach between 10pm and 5am you will see People on the beach either walking looking for shells or just enjoying the ocean I know I have
DeletePrayers to the family and wife of this beautiful women. And prayers to those who do not understand the pain of losing a loved one and that are not sympathetic to this family's loss. Again, I am so sorry for you loss.
ReplyDeleteDidn't walk on the beach in the dark
ReplyDeleteSending prayers to her family ..... 3 factors are 1) Its posted your not suppose to be on the beach after dark.2) The person cleaning the beach did or did not see her or the hole and 3) And whoever didnt fill the hole back in.... Which is why its called a freak accident.....
ReplyDeleteMy pure sorrow to this family... so incredibly sad.
ReplyDeleteYeah, cause nobody ever goes on the beach after 10pm!!!!really.. and my ex uncle dug a hole that big a few years back and it was when the tide was low, but it definitely was close to the water, so saying that it had to have been closer to the boardwalk is bull.. at low tide there is Alot of beach so YES this is absolutely possible.. and who said that the "mound of sand " was on the side that she was walking.toward... Stop trying to make this tragic, senseless accident your own personal investigation. Just say prayers to this family and move on.
ReplyDeleteIf a tractor covered her with sand, how was her arm sticking out of the sand........
ReplyDeletePraying for this family. This is so sad and people should not make hurtful comments. There was no way to anticipate a accident like this one.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite sad, but considering the toxicology report hasn't been released yet, and the OCPD is saying (as of August 4) that it could be "weeks", how are you going to sneak that into the write-up that it came back clean???
ReplyDeleteTo blame the tractor driver for not seeing the hole is just as ridiculous as blaming this poor girl for not seeing the hole when she fell into it. This is just a sad tragedy and accident.
ReplyDeleteToxicology early determination can be found through blood and urine. But why should it matter to some of you arguing on here? Whether she had been drinking alcohol or not, it happened. And from how it sounds, could have happened to anyone who stumbled upon this deep hole on a dark beach. Regardless of if a tractor was what ultimately (accidentally) filled in the hole, or it collapsed onto her while she tried to get out, it's an awful way to die. Prayers of strength for the family would be better than bickering on a public forum.
ReplyDeleteGod be with you and your family at this sad time.

Omg.. I'm disgusted at the selfish, heartless responses people have posted on here. Does it really matter if she had , had a few drinks or whatever?? I mean serioulsy. .. does it matter.. she was on vacation ... and to the family, I am in no way saying that she was even intoxicated , but to the ignorant people on here continuing to bring up a toxicology report, I'm going to.assume you have never had anything to drink on your vacation... I have had drinks on my vacation with family and friends and I have also took a walks the beach... it's not about that.. it's about a senseless death of a young woman. It's about a family burying there little girl, aunt, wife etc... drinking or not, there should never have been a 5 ft hole left In The sand .... I hope tragedy never hits close to home for you and you have to sit back and listen to the ignorance of other people like yourself who think they know everything and instead of having a heart and saying prayers and condolences to this family you find ways to rip the story apart to make it look like she deserved it I mean seriously are you kidding me right now... wow some people make me extremely sick to my stomach

ReplyDeleteI'm so very sorry, and I hope that you will get the privacy and peace you need to heal. Please try not to read the insensitive comments from people who say anything other than "I'm sorry for your loss." This kind of death is nothing but tragic, and the results of toxicology reports don't change that. -meg
ReplyDeleteSad for all. Thought beach patrol always checked the beach toward evenings? Guess not. For the one who dug the hole and left it, you will have to live this guilt for rest of your life. Be safe when walking the beach at night. Take a flash light, have a phone on you, that late at night anything can happen. Prayers to the family and friends.
ReplyDeletePrayers to you and your loved ones over the loss of a dear family member. Ignore the rude comments from others and may she RIP.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss. I personally never thought about holes on the beach, I grew up around the beach in Delaware and Fla and never really saw anyone dig holes that deep, of course motes around sand castles and holes for digging sand fleas and such and even the occasional bury the sibling but nothing ever that deep that someone could actually step in and be buried. It's an eye-opener, hopefully it won't ever happen again.
ReplyDeletePrayers to the family and friends. May you find comfort in you memories.
ReplyDeleteso whoever dug the hole must have had a ladder to climb out of it? smh
ReplyDeleteI was truly thinking the same thing. Smh
DeleteHow do u know she wasnt knocked out?
DeleteThose tractor drivers fly up and down that beach. Ive watched them many times. I'm sure they'll change protocol after this tragedy. Prayers to her friends and family!
ReplyDeleteVery sorry for your and the family's loss.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for your loss. It is so sad that something like this can happen. May God be with your family during this difficult time.
ReplyDeleteA life was lost in a tragic way but the way is not what should be focused on...only the life. The life here and the here after!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many people out there that can only speek evil. So sorry for the loss of this wonderful woman. So tragic
ReplyDeleteI must clarify- I am very sorry for this horrible accident, but I feel equally as sorry for the tractor driver. I am sure that it was not their intention and I am sure that they are also riddled with guilt. It was a horrible accident. May this be a lesson to us all that there is a reason for the beach rules and regulations.
ReplyDeleteIt truly is sad that this had to happen, but I'm seeing where the family is partially blaming the driver of the tractor. These tractors have bright lights on them, and if in fact this person was trying to 'climb' out of the hole, the tractor driver would have seen this and stopped cleaning the area. Apparently the sides of the hole must have collapsed PRIOR to the beach tractor coming through, and since the driver didn't see any activity, he could have proceeded to fill in the hole ... but this, along with any comment toward the tractor driver is HERESAY. Only the driver KNEW what he/she saw or didn't see and until that person speaks, who are we to ASSUME that this is what he/she did. We weren't there, so we have no right to tarnish his/her name. A true tragedy happened, it was an accident, and accidents don't place blame on anyone person. If that were the case then this family member who was "there" and wrote this note could be chastised for allowing this person to go alone on the walk. An accident plain and simple. It's horrible that someone had to die this way, and we can only hope that ALL beaches use this incident as a learning tool so that it doesn't happen again. May she R.I.P
ReplyDeleteSo sorry. Tragic. Yes, I have seen kids digging huge holes and that is insane. Parents don't even supervise. I saw this on Bethany Beach a few weeks ago. I didn't hear what happened and you explained it very well. Senseless and again I am sorry for this death. I cannot even imagine. Some of these practices need to change.
ReplyDeleteMaryland is my home state too. We were in OC in the beginning of July. I will always love it there, listening to the waves, smelling and feeling the ocean breeze and walking on the beach at any time of day or night. Prayers to her family. It is a tragic accident. She is able to listen to those waves forever. Lord, give her family comfort in this time of need.
ReplyDeleteYou must stay well north of the boardwalk. It's become disgusting down there especially I. The evening.
DeleteI'm assuming this hole was dug during the day with lifeguards on duty. At our beach, only a couple of miles north from OC, the lifeguards would tell people they couldn't dig holes like that and made them fill them in immediately. Is there a different rule in OC, or do the guards just not care?
ReplyDeleteNothing good can come when you decide after the bars close at 2:00am to take a walk alone on the beach in a very high crime and drug area of Ocean City.
ReplyDeleteso sorry for your loss. a loss to us all. because we are ALL connected.
ReplyDeleteI have to apologize again for the lesser humans on here. Now instead of showing proper respect, they want to argue about toxicology results. Please believe that not everyone is like these idiots.
ReplyDeleteAlso for the duplication of screen names. Some have no imagination or are not very well versed in computer functions or etiquette.
if someone dug a 5 foot hole certainly all the sand had to be piled up next to it to indicate a hole. It's sad all the way around and a teachable moment for everyone. I feel for the family for a senseless death
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for you and your families loss. Such a shame the world is full of unfeeling hateful humans.
ReplyDeleteGod rest her soul..
ReplyDelete10:18am. Wrong, MSP blood kits for DUI/DWI result usually take 4 to 6 weeks to get back.
ReplyDeleteYou are absolutely right about the negative comments. People are so heartless. My prayers go out to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteAll of you people.......... STOP ..... Just stop! Can't a tragedy happen without the whole damn world having all the answers. Send this girls family sympathy and condolences and leave the rest of your opinions to yourself. Just not necessary! Good day.
ReplyDeleteThis is not accurate at all. And if she was "from" this hometown their should be common sense not to let anyone walk alone at tge beach at night. And I have never seen a "5 ft" hole at our beaches just left. None of this makes any sense. Smh
ReplyDeleteI am so very sorry for your loss. May God rest her soul & bring peace & comfort to you & your family as you move through the difficult days ahead. RIP young lady...God bless
ReplyDeleteI fell in one of these deep holes in ocean city at night. My best friend and I used to joke about all the time. She would say I was talking to her one minute she was gone the next. I thought I had twisted my ankle and I couldnt get out. Thankfully i wasnt alone and she helped me. I dont think its a funny story anymore but a close call. People either need to stop making such huge holes or atleast fill them up! You seriously cant see them at night.
ReplyDeleteGood Lord people, stop telling others what to say in comments. People grieve differently and I'll be the first to say this is a very questionable situation. Many are trying to figure out WHY and HOW this happened and I agree with most, I do not trust anything the City has put out there. They need to just tell the TRUTH and this reflects on EVERY Family and loved on that visits Ocean City. Let people express themselves however they see fit. The really stupid comments have been rejected.
ReplyDeleteIts horrible that this family has to deal with the tragic and untimely death of this beautiful girl! I found myself sticking up for her ever since this happened. What a damn shame the world we live in,social media bullies/keyboard thugs, that the family would even need to provide us with this reply. Rip baby girl!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a heartbreakingly sad story and so hard to believe, this poor family lost a part of their hearts. This is one of those things that people dont think about ( unfortunatley sometimes it takes a tragedy for people to think ) Maybe because of this dear daughter, sister, wife and friend, this will never happen again. Condolences to family. God love you all. Remember : DON'T FORGET THE RULES, FILL IN THE HOLES !!
ReplyDeleteI've been hearing so many negative comments about this young lady it actually makes me sick. How can people have such little compassion for a life cut so short? May she rest in peace and may her family find some comfort in this difficult, tragic time. Hopefully this can be a lesson to us all - something as seemingly innocent as digging a hole on the beach can have severe consequences
ReplyDeleteI am so very truly sorry for this family and their loved ones it's such a tragic loss people really need to respect this family stop making up rumors stop making up lies and let them mourn the loss of their loved one I can think of many other things that everybody can be doing instead of talking and making up rumors about this family and I don't even know them let this family grieve and for the idiot full that Berry that that dug up that 5 foot hole I hope you live with this guilt for the rest of your life because they're obviously was adult supervision when that hole was dug and you're responsible for this
ReplyDeleteThe 30 year old woman who decided to take a "stroll" on the beach ALONE after 2:00am when the bars closed in a drug infested part of the beach is to blame. Oh, not to mention those who were with her that let her go.
DeleteWTH are some of you saying such things about this who cares about a Toxicology report. Did someone kill her yes but it wasn't the tractor driver, it was the idiots that dug the hole. To those of you that are making assumptions and making fun of this families tragedy, remember KARMA IS A BITCH!!
ReplyDeleteThis is heartbreaking... Her death needs to spur a campaign for awareness about digging and leaving holes on the beach. I'm sure no one anticipated the horrible events that were set into motion that day. :(
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss & the lack of compassion in some of the human race! So sad you have to deal with this.
ReplyDeleteIAM SO VERY SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS ALL OF YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS AN YOUR STORY FITS THE EVENTS IF THAT NITE AN WHAT A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. AN I DO FEEL THAT THOSE DRIVERS SHOULD HAVE CKED THE HOLE
ReplyDeleteSorry for such a tragedy. May God strengthen you and yourfamily through this ordeal.
ReplyDeletei'm so sorry for your loss, ignore any neggeative comments those people are ignorant and stupid and have nothng better to do with their time then lecture other people please accept my apology for these ignorant people most marylanders are very good people
ReplyDeleteThank you for explaining what happened. Bottom line is someone lost their life so bashing her and anyone else at this point isnt going to bring her back or help at all. Things happen that are unexplainable and we may never understand why.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for your loss. Hugs and many prayers for you and the rest of your family.
I am so very sorry for your families loss & my heart is breaking for them. I had the pleasure of meeting Ashley and her Mom that very evening not long before this tragedy happened and still in shock & disbelief. For the short time I was in her presence, I sensed a beautiful soul and may it now RIP. For those with negative comments, I pray you never experience any kind of devastation like this in your life. Let this family mourn their loss without judgment and remember this could've been you OR one your family members. My thoughts, prayers & condolences are with Ashley's friends & family and may they find peace & comfort in their memories of her.
ReplyDeleteIf any of Ashley's family reads this, my name is Jennifer (Jenn), if you could please let her Mom know I private messaged her on Facebook as well just so she knows. Thank you!
DeleteI am sorry for your loss, this is a huge tragedy. I hope your family finds peace one day.
ReplyDeleteI served for 7 years on the Ocean City Beach Patrol back on the 1990's. Even back then we would warn people about the dangers of deep holes. I routinely made folks fill holes in that were greater than knee deep. Once we had to lower a fellow lifeguard by his feet into a 6 foot deep hole to get a toddler out (tragedy averted - and I never found out how they managed to dig that thing).
Note that the cleanup tractors at night have a hard time seeing - as they scoop up their sand to filter out the litter they are dropping loads of sand behind them. I feel for the tractor driver as well - I am sure he feels terrible.
This is a tragic accident that will haunt many people for the rest of their lives. Let's all take a moment to wish comfort and peace to all involved. That's all that can be done now.
