By Thornton Crowe
By now, most of you should be at least mildly familiar with what happened to Minneapolis/St. Paul Mayor Betsy Hodges when her constituents called her out during a press conference about a police officer shooting a woman last week. The angry masses called for her to resign and, it seems, the pressure is mounting.
Yes, friends, she was like our Mayor, too busy with the aesthetics and fancy optics instead of dealing with real issues her residents faced on a day to day basis. She is disconnected from the region problems and continues to put lipstick on dead pig carcases. Sound familiar?
Day's tales of woe continue to mount as one ill-begotten initiative after another continues to unfold. From yesterday's ode to 'lowest crime in recorded history' to his insane puppeting about housing values being $133K more now that he's at the wheel, his mindless banterings seem to provide comic relief but not much else for Salisbury residents.
Can Main Street afford to lose businesses due to the never-ending gobstopper roadwork? While most older Salisburians remember there were more than one gas stations along that strip, it is likely Day and company haven't factored in all that contaminates soil - or the escalated cost to dispose of it. Therefore, when they reach the corner of Baptist and Main, will that turn into another 9-month ordeal? One can only hope the City Engineer (do we even have one?) will have already nailed down a swift solution but who knows with the haphazard manner our City seems to be governed.
With Hodges now feeling the heat to resign, it leads me to ponder; when will Salisbury have enough with the Day Clown Car Posse we live with everyday? Will it take that Section 8 low income housing actually being built smack dab in the middle of Downtown for the sleeping giant (aka Salisbury residents) to rise and take action? When is too much stupid, stupid enough to act? How many days do we have to live on Idiot Island before it becomes too old to bear any longer? Anyone? Anyone?
It's interesting when you ponder the local political scene because the media seems to fall lockstep with the national trends to damn the people actually working within our government while holding in high esteem those who are just full of hoodwinks for the public. Therefore, like CNN, they've rendered themselves useless in assisting you in discerning who's working and who's not!
All the Sears portrait poses and talks about 'cosmetic repairs' will not fix Salisbury's woes. Action and meaningful legislature will be the salvation - not banning chain link fencing. This is lost on our illustrious mayor as he continues down the same road, ignoring any constructive criticism.
Let's get one thing straight here...
Ah, some of you have sent in comments, claiming old Thornton is too hard on the Mayor and would never be satisfied with anything done to make Salisbury better. Many accuse me of naysaying all and that somehow, I get a charge out of browbeating the local political class. Hardly!
Unlike many I hear from, I don't see Salisbury as some lost cause beyond repair! I suffer from True Believerism. I do want Salisbury to rise from its own death rattle and it's up to the voters to do this - not someone like Jake Day. His fairy tale popsicle ideology is not what this area craves any more than Hodges is good for Minneapolis.
Some of you don't seem to grasp that if the local politicians I harp on would simply do their job and do right by you, the voters instead of all the endless pandering, lie spewing and cheap theatrics, they'd get no complaint from me whatsoever!
Dear Mr. Crowe ,
ReplyDeleteI have my doubts about females in politics now , looking at California and some other states , it's a disaster . Maxine Waters , Barbara Boxer , Pelosi
Warren , Hillary Clinton and many more . There have been a few that have impressed me , very few. They are too forgiving , they know nothing of most laws and hate the constitution. Take a good look at Duncan , pathetic.
Sorry to say what I feel is the truth , the people elected these idiots , so they should suffer in silence . Now our boy mayor is very similar , he is a boy and acts the same , holding on to his mommies apron . If you can realize that some males act and do the same as females then it will come into perspective. Would I like to have Day beside me in combat ? Of course not , would I like to have Maxine Waters beside me in combat , of course not . These are my opinions along with with many others I've talked to.
Once they build The Projects downtown the only businesses that survive will be those who sell lumber to board up all the abandon buildings and places that sell security cameras.
ReplyDelete7:36 as a Mayor he should be both of what you mentioned and more. He has to be a little bit of everything.
ReplyDeleteIts not hundreds of thousands being hemorrhaged - long term its MILLIONS that will be impossible to retrieve via return on investment.
ReplyDeleteSad that there is no end in sight!!! Especially when so called section 8 eventually becomes BLIGHT!
NOBODY in dabury has the balls to do it.
ReplyDeleteNo matter how you slice it the eastern shore, Salisbury and OC are on a dead end road.
ReplyDeleteANON 7:41AM
ReplyDeleteYou seem to miss the point here and that's startling to say the least. It's not about gender that proves to be good versus bad governance. The real heart of the matter is the ability to capture what people want - whether said or implied - and fulfilling that need. This is how good salespeople become successful. They read people, know their wants, desires, fears and what have you - then seek to fulfill those items without waste. It's not something that's dictated by male v. female - it's about common sense v. ideology only.
Quite frankly, I don't hold Chuckie Schumer, Al Gore, Lindsey Graham, Paul Ryan or Adam Schiff to be any great prize either. They're all inept and incompetent at their positions because their real world experience is trace at best. They don't know how to read people and therefore, don't serve their voters well, if at all.
Thanks for your comment anyway as it was enlightening to some of the mindset going on in our world today.
What happened to the Apologist for Ineptness (7:36's) dumb comment?
ReplyDeleteApparently 7:41 didn't know Mikulski in her younger days. Now there was one tough woman. Unfortunately, senility seemed to be taking over towards the end.
ReplyDeleteI would like to elaborate on these so called two deployments the illustrious mayor did. The army calvary unit was in the 19th and 20th CENTURY a vital part of our army's function, but I was under the assumption they were disbanded today. What VITAL role would such a units deployment in the middle east play?? I know its obvious now with all the selfies and photos plastered on social media they must have been deployed to document the actual events taking place. Jake Day you can color it anyway you want but one can sit back watch and laugh at how meticulously you picked every aspect of your career to give you the least resistance to one day try and fulfill an attempt at a position in Annapolis. You actually sound pretty ridiculous though when you personally try to take a more conservative faith based roll, then as a mayor try to jump on the current liberal trends, housing, health care for everyone attitude. Which side are you really playing for? Oh I get it your playing this thing right down the middle, Jake day's side, I'm the captain now bitches. You would probably sh** pi** yourself if you actually were put in an actual combat zone
ReplyDeleteAmen to that Mr Crowe. Unfortunately Mr Day is to self centered to admit his wrongs or change his ways, its much easier for some to lie cheat and steal their way threw life. It takes a strong individual to do the right things, I dont think he has it in him...
ReplyDelete829 you just got blocked by Day on Facebook!
ReplyDeleteThat's the extent of Jake Day's retaliation? He's a douche. I have and will continue to call out the school boy mayor and ALL of those within his immediate inner circle. They are a bunch of clowns that are in this for themselves and try to take credit for some sort of great transformation and movement when in reality they are doing more harm than good. In the eyes of the dew that actually listen and support their agendas they seem like the second coming of the "almighty" when in actuality they operate by a bogus double standard, a bunch of FRAUDS!!
DeleteAdditionally to answer one of mayor Days closest confidants it always ends up being a "single warrior" fighting in battle, somehow, somewhere, someway we end up in a confrontation with the likes of boy wonder Jake day it inevitability, almost 99% of the time takes a special type of individual to bail their asses out. Its sickening to witness theclijes of military officers like day who are literally more involved in documenting their experiences digitally for the sole purpose of sharing, boasting, feeding their egos when they get back state side. You guys are not even on a level close to being considered to call yourselves a "warrior"
DeleteWaited ALL afternoon to hear what type of response you might have the assistant administrators come up with, I mean come on all of us lower intelligence class of people couldn't possibly match wits with Salisbury's finest. Got news for you young man there ARE a few of us that have you pegged and know exactly what we're talking about. We know your aspirations, confiding in the lines of anderton, hogan, and with daddy days resources where this is headed. The whole military officer, mayor credential. with whatever education you actually do possess still won't be enough to secure a successful run on Annapolis. Have to give it to you though you've done just about everything your cronies advised you to do as far as swaying a voting curve your way but in doing so Salisbury has hit the shitter, and you can't sensor Salisbury's statistics state wide, not to mention the media attention that you've drawn both state and federally for our crime problem
Delete8:01 AM - Thornton, Thank you. My thoughts also.
ReplyDelete7:41, it's about intelligence and ability to lead, not gender. Oh how I wish Debbie Campbell or Terry Cohen had become mayor. Both brilliant leaders who truly cared about the city and people...not fluff and optics. The city voters were wooed by tricksters like Day. Sad for us.
ReplyDelete844 he ran unopposed there was no wooing involved it's like marrying the last person on earth other than yourself. You're stuck with stupid by default.
ReplyDeleteDebbie Campbell and Terry Cohen are examples of what Democrats are doing to this country now, never getting anything done. No thank you!
ReplyDeleteI just don't get it.
ReplyDeleteWho is really running the show?
The Mayor is a part time job, BUT we have 3 full time over paid City Administrators?
Has anyone other than me thought about this?
Haven't we come past the time where this part time gig is effective?
No real change is going to come until that position is taken seriously.
917 makes a good point and you didn't vote for either of the city administrators making decisions for you every day. They got their jobs because they partied with the right people.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of city administrators, why are Salisbury citizens paying for her vehicle? On her outrageous salary, can't Glanz afford her own car to drive to and from work? Why is there a city vehicle sitting in her space every morning when I drive by in my beat up junker to go to work?
ReplyDeleteGlanz's Range Rover must be in the shop.
ReplyDeleteLike on the national level, it is difficult for the citizens to get government to what is in their best interests.
ReplyDeleteIt is a question of GOVERNANCE in general being posed here in this article.
There is always a small clique of rich people who band together and get what they want from government.
In Salisbury this clique is well known, the names have been printed, we know who they are and what they want, profits.
How does the public wrestle from this clique the power of the local government?
That is the question at hand.
There's no sense in us paying for Julia Glanz to ride around in a city car. Why would she have to leave her office except to cut ribbons and smile for the camera. Third Fridays are a walk across the street. Why is this acceptable to residents?
ReplyDeleteTo fill the gap and to answer the all so important question the writer asks, NONE, NODDA, NOTHING will infuriate these people who live in SBY who call themselves residents, They will never have enough, and the evidence proves it more than ever now than in past times... They love being lied to, and they love being a slave and the love paying higher and higher taxes... So politicians can give themselves raises...
ReplyDeletePeople don't get out and vote, and when they do, they vote based on who looks better or who bashed the other side better or the classic, they base it on what they saw or heard on TV news media (which by now everyone should know flat out lies to your face, but sadly they still listen and believe them)...
Then you have the voters who are just plain stupid!!! Who believes everything they are told, especially when they get lip service from a politician...
Unfortunately Salisbury is just an example of what's happening all across the country. Not until you reach the mid west do you actually see towns/cities/communities actually getting better. Taxes wasted everywhere and more and more people doing nothing to better themselves unless its a free ride. Makes me sic each and everyday as I ride around the Bury.
ReplyDeleteIf Jake had a quarter of a brain he'd see Thornton is trying to help him not hurt him. Tough love is lost on the boy wonder whose whole life revolved around him and people giving him cheers for 6th place wins and winning by default. But whatever.
