Army Mulls Creating New Pay Grades for Senior NCOs

The U.S. Army's top enlisted leader is trying to build momentum for an effort to create two new pay grades -- E-10 and E-11 -- to compensate senior noncommissioned officers as they take on more command responsibility.

Currently, enlisted pay grades stop at E-9, but command sergeants major typically advance from battalion level to higher command positions such as brigade-, division- and corps-level CSM without additional compensation.

Commissioned officers receive a pay increase each time they are promoted, all the way up to four-star general.

Sgt. Major of the Army Daniel Dailey discussed the effort at a recent conference in Texas but would not comment for this article.

  1. A complete and unnecessary crock of crap! These idiots only want to give some politically connected yes-men a pay raise. At that level, these individuals are only looking for their next higher command and don't give a crap about the troops they are supposed to be the liaison for.

The Marine Corps Manual for Occupational Specialties for 1stSgts and SgtsMaj stated "no specific skills required"! With a few exceptions, these non-technical senior enlisted guys were only there because they got an affirmative-action/quota promotion or stuck around and outlasted everyone else while sticking their noses so far up the old-mans butt that they could tell what he had for breakfast the day before!

  3. If you want to pay them more for more responsibility, attach a bonus to the position, not a rank hike.

  4. "Top" is correct, E-9's are public/political positions for the most part. They have no contact with the enlisted ranks other than for ceremonial purposes. The same thing can be said for 1st Sergeants too, Master Sergeants and Master Gunnery Sergeants still hang out with the Soldiers/Marines.
