WASHINGTON, DC: On June 15, President Trump rolled back the program knowns as Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). The Obama-era program is an extension of another program, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allowed children brought into the United States illegally to remain in the country. DAPA would have exempted parents of children covered by DACA from deportation. Congressman Andy Harris (MD-01) issued the following statement in support of President Trump’s decision:
“I support the cancellation of plans to exempt illegal immigrants from lawful deportation. The plan would have unilaterally expanded the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program without authorization by Congress. While courts had previously ruled against the Obama-era policy and blocked its implementation, this decision by the Trump administration will encourage the legal entry of vetted people into the United States - which helps protect our security and enforce the rule of law.”
