Philadelphia's top prosecutor has pleaded guilty to a corruption charge and agreed to resign.
In a surprising move, District Attorney Seth Williams pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court to a single count of accepting a bribe from a businessman.
As a result of his guilty plea, Williams faces up to five years behind bars, and he agreed to forfeit almost $65,000.
The 50-year-old Democrat was led out of court in handcuffs after the plea, after District Judge Paul Diamond ruled he had to be remanded until sentencing in October.
'I have a guilty plea from the highest law officer in the city that he betrayed his office and he sold his office … I am appalled by the evidence that I heard,' the judge said, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
'I simply do not credit this defendant’s testimony. I do not believe him.'
