Sea Grass Takes Over Beach In Ocean City

A large amount of phragmite, or sea grass, has washed up on the beaches from 94th Street north to the Delaware State Line. Citizens are advised to avoid walking through the grass due to debris and other sea life that could be hidden underneath. Public Works crews will be working through the night to clear spaces through the grass and around lifeguard stands so that the public can get to the water.

  1. Sea grass equals a healthy ocean...

Sorry the winds blew it all on the beach.

  2. Yes, it appears to be sea grass, which grows on the bottom in salt water. But it's not Phragmites, which is an invasive plant that grows like mad to six feet or higher on the shorelines of brackish and fresh water around the Chesapeake area.

  3. 9:58 Phragmites isn't a specific plant. It's the name for a group of sea/reed grasses.

  4. Right Phragmites is the genus and not a name of just one plant.

  5. Don't confuse them with fancy biology words. They already knows mans and womans are only allowed to marry each other.

  7. But no Phragmites is a form of sea grass like what's shown in the picture.

  8. Was down in the Keys a couple of months ago and something similar took place one evening. The next morning, workers from the establishment were hauling 55 gallon trash cans of the sea grass to the dumpster. Took them over an hour and the grass stunk pretty bad. Can't imagine the truck loads and man hours to remove this stuff from OC.
