PIT BULL ATTACKS OCEAN PINES WOMAN, SENDING HER TO HOSPITAL

A 52-year-old woman is recovering after being attacked by a dog along Beaconhill Road in Ocean Pines.

The incident happened Wednesday, April 5 at around 11:32 a.m. An Ocean Pines police officer was dispatched to Beaconhill Road for the reported dog bite.

Upon arrival, the officer located Mary Christine Ernst, 52, of Ocean Pines, sitting on her front steps with a towel around her left leg. The responding officer checked her injuries and noticed two long deep lacerations in her left calf with bleeding, a puncture to her right upper arm and scraped knees.

According to a witness, Ernst and her dog, an American Cocker Spaniel, were leaving the witness’s home when he heard her screaming outside. William Jerry Jones, 82, of Ocean Pines, said he quickly ran outside and saw his neighbor’s Pit Bull Terrier biting into the leg of Ernst.

It appears two Pit Bulls had gotten out of a fenced-in gate, according to police. Jones said he managed to get a Pit Bull dog known as “Manny” off of Ernst by kicking it. But “Manny” then ran into Jones’ attached garage and attacked his 7-year-old male mixed Rat Terrier/Chihuahua dog. Armed with a shovel, Jones chased the two Pit Bulls back onto their deck and secured the gate.

Ernst was transported by Ocean Pines EMS to Atlantic General Hospital. Police said “Manny” had attacked the 52 year-old woman, her American Cocker Spaniel and the neighbor’s seven year-old male mixed Rat Terrier/Chihuahua dog. The Worcester County Animal Control was requested to respond to the scene. “Manny” was turned over to the Worcester County Animal Control to be euthanized.

Ocean Pines Police Department contacted the dog owners, Robert Leo Riden Jr, 47, and his wife, Geri Riden, 46, both of Ocean Pines. Mr. Riden told police he pulled the sunroom door shut, but may not have shut it all the way. Mr. Riden stated that he had renters insurance. Mr. Riden was cited for a leash-law violation and was given two $100 Uniform Civil Citations.

    1. There will be when they are sued, though I suspect you won't get much out of them.

  2. When will people learn what the true disposition of these dogs is? You don't hear about any vicious attacks from much of any other breed. Don't trust them as far as I can throw them.

    2. Those breeds you mentioned have never caused anywhere nearthe deaths, injury, medical bills, funeral expenses, life flights, vet bills, and pain ,agony, and heartache as the Pit Bull has. I would never throw one, I carry a gun when walking my dog

  3. Another fine example of why Pitt Bulls should be banned. I've never understood why anyone would want one of these vicious animals.

  4. I really really hate pitbulls. I've had 2 family members and a close friend viciously attacked by 3 different pits and 3 different circumstances over the years. 1 nearly ripped my friends face off and she's had to go through several plastic surgeries over the years. You can still see a pretty big scar on her face its a shame.

    1. Ill ask the question that no one will.... were these pitbulls every one of you claim to be vicious owned by thugs or wanna be thugs living in the ghetto? Thats the real problem. These degenerate thuga see rappers on tv and you tube with pitbulls and think its cool so they get one and dont know how to take care of themselves much less an animal. Because lil wayne gots a pitbull shoot hommie i better gets one too.... id bet anything that these reports of pitbulls biting and killing, that their owners are younger black and live in the ghetto.

  6. Check out the Wicomico Humane Society website. Over half the dogs up for adoption are pit bulls. That sums it up.

  8. Pitbull bashing much?! It's not the dogs it's the people that raise them that's the problem.if people would socialize them instead of using them as a scary garden statue it would be different so don't blame the breed!!!

    1. Disagree. I'm the commenter from 2:15, the pit bull that attacked my girl friend was raised in a loving home since it was a puppy. She had known the dog since it was a puppy and was attacked out of the blue for no apparent reason. She had been in the owners home for 15 mins sitting on the couch talking when out of nowhere it pounced and latched on, shaking his head violently. I saw the whole thing it took 2 grown men to beat the SOB off of her it was a nightmare.

    3. Lol what do I have to gain from making up a story like that? Nothing. Just like I have nothing to gain from telling the truth to a bunch of people over the bet. With that being said, it was in the Cape Gazette (delaware beach area paper) about 10 years ago and will pop up easily in a search. The pit owners last name was D. Emerick, out of the Angola area.

With that info you should easily be able to corroborate my story but I'm guessing since you don't "no" the difference between "know" and "no", you wont " no" how to use Boolean string searches to find the answer.

  9. Here we go again!! If we start putting the irresponsible owners down, the pits would not be a problem. I agree that some dogs are just bad and in my personal experiences those have been German Shepherds, but I do not think they should be banned. Owners must be held responsible.

    1. German Shepherds are family dogs and would risk their own life to save their families. They are very smart, loyal, protective dogs. Please do not compare or use German Shepherds in the same sentence as a pitbull. Pitbulls are over bred and most end up inbred.

  11. 3:31 PLEASE stop. People are sick and tired of hearing that same retreaded pitiful excuse. Most pit owners will tell you that any attacks by their pits are "an accident" or "out of the ordinary".. Yeah, right - more like a ticking time bomb. We ALL are blaming the breed and people like you who think they are somehow "darling pets". You better believe its pitbull bashing. Go over and talk to Ms. Ernst how nice they are. You can't socialize a dog that has viciousness bred into it for decades.

No they were NOT. None of those breeds have ever had the attack records that Pit bulls have and you know it! Stop trying to make excuses!

  18. Ban all dogs. 60 percent of Americans have pitbulls or pitbulls mixes. They have strong bites though 99 percent are trained and well raised. This one obviously wasn't. Since people make absurd uneducated comments based on lack of statistical reference like the ones at the top of this post, there really is no choice. Ban all dogs. Chihuahuas, poodles, per capital more likely to bite, ban them. Friendly golden retrievers, round me up. Hunting dogs, put em in the pound. Cats can cause disease and scratch your eyes out, ban em. While we are at it, confiscate everyone's dangerous guns, much more likely to kill you. How about these radical automobiles causing harm and death? Ban em. What about coconuts, they cause 180 deaths falling from trees per year, cut down all palm trees. What about food poisoning? It can kill. Ban food. Water can give you diarrhea if even slightly contaminated, ban it, drain the water! This is the key to a safe and happy world, get rid of everything and put yourselves in padded rooms.

  23. It's not the way you raise them, it's instinct. Why would anyone want a dog that you have to train not to be aggressive? 6:12 is an obvious idiot because Labs rarely bite and would have to be trained To be aggressive, just the opposite of Pitts. Guns do not harm people but Pitt Bulls do 5:54. As far as your other suggestions they are just ridiculous, you should know better.
