Ocean Pines Attack Leads To Dog Being Euthanized

OCEAN PINES — A local woman along with two small dogs are recovering after getting attacked by a dog last weekend, but the attacking dog, a pit bull terrier, has been turned over to Worcester County Animal Control to be euthanized.

Around 11:30 a.m. last Wednesday, an Ocean Pines Police officer was dispatched to the area of Beaconhill Road for a reported dog bite. Upon arrival, the officer located the victim, identified as Mary Ernst, 52, of Ocean Pines, sitting on her front steps with a towel around her left leg. The responding officer checked the victim’s injuries and noticed two deep lacerations in her left calf, a puncture wound to her upper right arm and scraped knees.

A witness told police Ernst and her dog, an American cocker spaniel, were leaving the witness’s home when he heard screaming outside. The witness told police he ran outside and saw his neighbor’s dog, a pit bull terrier named Manny, biting into Ernst’s leg. According to police reports, it appears two pit bulls had gotten out of a fenced-in area.

  1. But those Pit Bulls are such nice dogs (Sar). Don't their fans all say it's all how you raise them? That they're NOT dangerous, by nature? Why don't we hear these stories about other breeds? It is rare that there is this kind of story that doesn't involve a Pit Bull. And then the owners wonder why communities want to ban them.

  2. Sad day when a dog gets murdered for no reason. Labs have bit more people then any other dog.

  3. 4:08 to be fair these attacks do happen with other breeds. What's more likely to get you to click pitbull or black lab? They need more training than your average dog and most idiots that get them to look tough don't train them and this kind of thing happens. The rest of us have to deal with the problem they created.

  5. 4:31 are you that far out of touch with reality? Attacking and seriously injuring someone is no reason to kill this dog? What would you do with the dog, return it home and let it attack some other innocent person? I totally agree with 5:15, pit bulls should be eliminated totally.

  6. It is how they are raised but media needs hype so they only report mostly pitbull attacks because that will get people riled up and keep the hype going plus all you got to do is say "pitbull" and people cringe any dog is able and willing to bite they all have teeth kids have bad habit of biting people too so i guess we should end the human race as well right(sarcastically said)

  7. Labs have the most bites because there are stadtically many many many more.

  8. Your logic is horribly flawed 10:29. You really need some mental health care. Can't you determine the difference in getting bit by a child or a chihuahua and being attacked by pit bull that has been bred to fight and kill.

  9. Pit bulls are responsible for over over 1/2 of dog bites in the country and over 90% of fatal dog attacks. 4:31, To suggest that Labs bite more or have "bit more" is false. Statistics are kept by the CDC and can be viewed online.

  10. Pit Bulls don't just nip people, and maybe bite the mailman. They maul and kill other animals and children. When they attack, they often will not stop the attack until the victim is dead. Then they will protect their "kill" from anyone who approaches. Comparing Pit Bulls to dogs that "bite" people, as opposed to attacking and killing the victim, whether it be animal or human, is just asinine and irrational. Their innate qualities make them unsuitable for pets and they should be banned as pets, and licensed as deadly weapons for anyone that owns one. They should be kept locked up like guns, and regulated like any other use of deadly force.

  11. 10:29....no, it's not the media. You apparently have never been to the MANY sites that post about these same kind of attacks, and they have never made the news. STOP MAKING EXCUSES FOR THESE PITS! It's disgusting how you PB advocates care more about dogs than people.

  12. 4:31...really? How about YOU take it in? See how that goes.
Oh, that's right. You wouldn't be the one to do that. Let someone else take their chance with it. Who cares, as long as the dog isn't murdered.
I swear, pit lovers all share a brain.
