Experience Harriet Tubman’s Eastern Shore

Water, marsh, trees, sky. This is the landscape of Dorchester County, MD, repeating itself along undulating narrow roads with high ditches for dozens of flat country miles.

This is the land where Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in 1822, where her sisters were sold to distant plantations and Tubman was sold to a new master at the age of 6. It’s the land she fled in 1849 to become a free woman in Pennsylvania, and it’s the place to which she returned to free her brothers, parents and approximately 70 others.

With a pistol at her hip and a no-nonsense demeanor, Tubman guided people to freedom through the Underground Railroad, a network of pathways and safe houses established throughout the United States to help enslaved people escape to the North. Tubman liked to say that she never lost a passenger.

Now, more than a century after her death, the woman born Araminta “Minty” Ross is getting her due in the place where she was born. She changed her name to Harriet after marrying John Tubman, a free black man, in 1844.

  1. She was a criminal, she was also a thief. She should not be heralded as a hero for breaking the law of the land. Just because you don't agree with a aw, that doesn't entitle you to break it. Nor does it allow you to take someone else's property.

I don't agree that you can take a wild horse and call it yours and sell it for a profit, so can I go and free the horse or take it? Just makes me a criminal like she was.

  2. So what she was a criminal, Had my family been enslaved I would have tried to break the law as well. No matter what way you look at it slavery was wrong, so what if blacks were enslaved by blacks in Africa and they sold them to the white man it was still wrong. I guess if slavery become legal again and you become a slave you would just say screw it its against the law so I will just be a slave. And to compare her to a wild horse. Really?

  4. The writer is using the same analogy as they were thought of, property, just like a horse. The US Supreme court even agreed, they were property, and should be returned to their owner. He is also correct is saying that she was in fact, a criminal. You probably root for Jessie James too!

  5. Honoring black criminals and thugs is now the accepted thing in this PC world.

We have NFL players doing murder, beating dogs, wives, people, and all is okay since they play football.
We name schools and streets for a man that plagiarized his Doctoral Theseus, and frequented Prostitutes, while married.
We are putting a woman on the $20 that was a criminal and ignored a law she deemed not worthy of obeying.
Recently if you criticized the past president you were called a "Racist".
Now if you praise the current president, you are also called a "Racist".

    This world is upside down.

  6. 3:50 am... No, you should know your history! I have a degree in history and saying there were more irish slaves then africans is a debunked myth pushed by white supremacist. And yes Tudman was a criminal for freeing slaves, and so was the founding fathers for signing the Declaration of Independence. Just because something is legal doesn't make it morally right.

  9. It will be refreshing in 25-30 years when most of the racists have all died off.

When they die off, we will become a third world cesspool like India, Brazil, Central America and most of Africa. The U.S. is already becoming this way in many urban areas of this country. It is white western European culture and values that have brought prosperity. It not racism that brings so much of the human garbage in the world to want to immigrate to these countries. The problem is, they bring their values and problems with them. In fact the very problems they tried to escape from.
