Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz affirms immigrant protections

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz signed an order Wednesday prohibiting county law enforcement from inquiring about the immigration status of anyone they encounter.

The order also says police and sheriff’s deputies cannot hold detainees past their release dates at the request of federal deportation agents, unless those agents have presented a judicial order.

“We do this because it promotes sound police practices,” Kamenetz (D) said at a news conference. “We want to continue to maintain the community trust among the residents we are obligated to protect. Driving people underground makes us less safe.”

The executive order broadly prohibits discriminating against people or withholding benefits based on their immigration status. It also limits police cooperation with federal authorities “except in the case of a criminal warrant signed by a judicial official.”

  4. Hiding and protecting CRIMINALS is, according to this liberal loser, is "sound police practices".
    Did we msiss something?
The POLICE not interested in criminals in our midst? They, like they tell "we, the people" all the time, DO NOT get to choose which laws we will obey.
That right is reserved for people who don't answer to any law....the police and illegal immigrants.
You and I? Pay your taxes, fines, fees, and surcharges and shut the hell up.
You "leaders" are way too busy making sure criminals and their familes get the best medical care, housing, education, and social services to include FREE LEGAL HELP if you get busted in a country you shouldn't even be in.....
You and I? We get a part time job so the electric stays on another month and we have a chance at hitting the $5000 decuctible. We call our "leaders", but they never call back.....
    Keep cheering.

  9. Ordering a law enforcement agency to ignore the law?????? The sheriff's dept, should tell him where to stuff that law. Sheriff's dept is elected by the people. This will not happen.
