Judge Grants Oregon Resident the Right to Be Genderless

History was quietly made in Oregon this month when a judge granted a Portlander's request to become genderless.

Patch, a 27-year-old video game designer, is likely the first legally agender person in the United States.

The Multnomah County Court granted Patch a "General Judgment of Name and Sex Change" on March 10. In the same judgment, Patch was also allowed to change names, becoming mononymous — meaning only having one name instead of a given name and a surname.

  1. At this point who cares? Since this crap is constantly being thrown in my face I will treat you all like children. Great, you exist but, you really dont have a say in anything that the adults do. If you sit quietly you will get a gold star. If you insist on making noise than I will ignore you.

So who really cares about this?

  2. I was wondering when this would happen. As for the name change, that can be very confusing in the long run if a trend expands. It'll be a giant step backwards in the history of personal naming.
To differentiate one of thousands upon thousands of Johns from another, it used to be that the name of his occupation or place of birth or residence would be affixed as a surname. If we go back to that, will we see names like Adam Manhattan Bikemessenger or Robert OCMD Realtor, and his son and business heir, Robert OCMD Realtor Jr.?

  3. What does being without gender even mean? No characteristics of any sort of gender behavior or identification on the gender scale? Maybe it's time to take away the job application boxes that ask "Male" or "Female", or give a "Refuse to answer" option.

  5. So if "Patch" decided to rob a convenience store, would the description of the person go out over the airwaves as "a caucasian, genderless person who has a beard"? I wonder if "Patch" has a tee shirt that says "Don't call me Mister"!
