State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt announced today that the Baltimore City Grand Jury has returned three indictments charging former Baltimore Community High School Principal Leslie Lewis, age 44, of Owings Mills, Maryland in connection with thefts of money and property from the school. Lewis is charged in a total of six counts; three separate counts of theft, two counts of misappropriation by a fiduciary and one count of conspiracy to commit theft. Her colleague, Albert Fluker, age 45, of Randallstown, a former teacher at the school, was also charged with theft and conspiracy to commit theft. The case was referred to the State Prosecutor’s Office by the Baltimore City Public School System’s Office of Legal Counsel.
The charges allege that in one scheme Lewis, while employed as Principal of Baltimore Community High School, stole approximately $13,409.28 from a PNC bank account which she set up on behalf of Baltimore Community High School. These funds were the proceeds of the sale of school uniforms, school supplies, snacks, class dues payments, and graduation fees. Lewis used an ATM/ Debit card associated with this PNC account to make 49 ATM withdrawals at Maryland Live Casino.
A second scheme charges that Lewis used deceptive purchase orders to steal over $40,000.00 worth of technology from Baltimore City Public Schools through their internal purchasing system.
The third indictment charges a scheme in which Lewis and Fluker worked together to steal four flat screen televisions from the school. Both are charged with theft and conspiracy to commit theft of the televisions.
State Prosecutor Emmet C. Davitt stated: “There is no one more trusted and relied upon in the school system than a school principal. The betrayal of that trust by Ms. Lewis is monumentally offensive and cannot be tolerated.”
Although charged, the Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until there is a conviction.
