Defunding NPR Likely Wouldn’t Go Into Effect for 2 Years

Defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, an idea floated by the Trump administration, would likely take two years to go into effect.

The funding for CPB, which receives roughly $450 million a year for public television and public radio, is allotted two years in advance. Any appropriations bill that did not include new funding for the CPB would mean that it would not be defunded until fiscal year 2019.

President Donald Trump is expected to release his budget blueprint on Monday. Transition officials have signaled that the president plans dramatic cuts, including privatizing the CPB and eliminating both the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities.

The move would cut funding to National Public Radio, widely considered liberal-leaning, which recently failed to disclose during an interview with Trump-bashing former CIA analyst Ned Price that he was a Hillary Clinton donor.

NPR claims federal funding is "essential," even though it also acknowledges that on average "less than 1 percent" of its annual operating budget comes from grants from the CPB.

Exact funding that NPR receives from the taxpayer is unclear.

  1. It should be immediate. Why are we paying for the loony liberals to have yet one more soapbox to throw their tantrums from? DTired of paying for their liberal bullshit. It's a ridiculous waste of money, resources and time.

  2. Seems like a good argument to do it. If public radio cant raise enough money with two years notice, then does it deserve to exist?

I would LOVE to donate to Salisbury University's classical station if they would just drop ALL NPR.

  4. I completely agree with the other statements. I am sick and damn tired of our taxpayer dollars being spent to manufacture liberal Kool-Aid. If it was fair and balanced, I would have no issues with it. But, damn, that stuff is way left winged and anti-Trump.
    End it NOW.

  6. It's a shame because their non-political programs are fantastic. I love science Friday! When it comes to gun rights, immigration, Government regulation, domestic spying, climate change ect they are militantly liberal. They just need better management. Be like C-SPAN, present just the facts and let me decide. Otherwise they need to be shut down. It's a shame because there are many in the organization that do great work.

  7. It does not need to be defunded, just restaffed with normal people disseminating factually correct news and stories. Fire all the bleeding heart liberals!

  9. heirs something to think about....I've heard the hosts of public radio say that they receive only a small amount of government money...and yet, they bitch and moan when govt. money is threatened.
Well, which is it? if they dont need govt. money, then why complain about losing it?
