BUFFALO, N.Y. – They don't mean to sound ungrateful, but ... New York public college students who stand to gain from the nation's most ambitious free-tuition proposal point to a sobering reality: Free tuition doesn't mean free college.
Students tell The Associated Press tuition help is welcome but the $6,500-a-year expense is only about a third of the total bill when things like housing and books are added.
Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's proposal would pay the difference between financial aid and tuition at public colleges for students whose families earn $125,000 or less.
Cuomo's office says the goal is to provide the most students with the greatest opportunity.
The New York proposal is one of an increasing number of plans across the country aimed at the nation's $1.2 trillion in student debt.

Ridiculous. When manufacturing went offshore democrats convinced some that 'education' was the key to getting a good paying job. Then when that didn't pan out because there are so few jobs for people educated or otherwise, 'free' tuition became the democrat mantra. Makes no difference if it's free when job opportunities are so limited. Then add to that the democrats liberal immigration policies which allows those who are ready, willing and able to work for less money. Unless there is a huge overhaul to the system a college education is meaningless. This 'no one can take it from you' nonsense is just that. Of course no one can 'take it' but the important thing is-such a big investment of both time and money should work for you and be to your advantage. At the moment the only ones who are benefiting are college and university employees.

The only thing FREE tuition equates to is MORE MONEY for professors and colleges. When the tax payer starts making the payments the tuition fees will go up GUARANTEED !!!
ReplyDelete"free" comes at a price, mostly on the backs of hardworking people who are living paycheck to paycheck.
ReplyDeleteThose college degrees are meaningless. I'll never go to a doctor or lawyer with a college degree ever again.
ReplyDeletetrade school. Work two jobs until you get flushed up to buy a small house for almost cash. drive reliable junk. Don't smoke. Don't have cable. Don't wear name brands. Get dressed up Sunday and go to church. Rest your sore body and eat healthy. Repeat this over and over. You will have money and be happy.
ReplyDeleteIts far more free than I paid.. 30 grand a year and I am up to my ears in debt... damn it why couldn't I be one of those freeloaders!
ReplyDeleteFree tuition...it doesn't include room and board. Do these idiots not get it....OH...OK, I'm mistaken
ReplyDeleteI received college financial help on the World War II G.I. Bill. I went to school (4 years) from 8am to 5pm each day, worked from 6pm to midnight, and Saturdays all day. I thought I had the best opportunity for a college education in the world, and I still believe it.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't a complaint, but a brag.

A college education is the biggest rip-off ever concocted by mankind. The return on investment is nowhere near where it should be. If you were asked to invest in any other investment and expected such a low return, would you do it? Hell, NO!
ReplyDeleteHow colleges and universities have been able to maintain this charade is inconceivable. They build monstrous facilities using public dollars and then increase tuition and- as we see here- hidden fees to pay for that and overpaid professors who teach one or two classes per semester.
College cost inflation is going up double that of health care and triple normal inflation. It's time for it to stop.
The student loan organization (Sallie Mae) is in bed with college administrators: as long as there are funds available, they can keep bending over students AND PARENTS!!
Ha, monstrous facilities using public dollars. Reminds me of NFL, NHL, NBA and MLB stadiums. ZERO return on investment - ever! Or a nation hosting the world wide Olympics....ZERO return on investment - ever!
