District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser wants to make it easier to deny shelter to homeless people who don't live in the District.
Bowser proposed emergency legislation on Tuesday that would allow the city to turn people away if their last place of residence can't be verified.
The District guarantees shelter to homeless people on freezing nights, and the homeless population has increased over the past few years. Last year the mayor opened the shelters year round, guaranteeing families can get off the street even when the temperature is above freezing.
The city's main homeless shelter is full, and the city is currently spending $80,000 a night on hotel rooms for families who have nowhere else to stay.

ReplyDeleteTime to build another hotel for the homeless in DC. Maybe use some unused government buildings.
ReplyDeleteI must be missing something here, how in the he** do you prove last residence of a HOMELESS person or family? They are homeless! Is she really that stupid?
ReplyDeleteThey can vote there without proof of citizenship but can't find shelter there without a firm last address in the district. This sounds a bit flaky.
ReplyDeleteShes racist!!!!
ReplyDeleteWait a minute. How can they deny people from another state when our own government WON'T deny people from another country? Come on democrats this is hypocritical! Take down that wall DC and allow EVERYONE to come in and take the benefits right?
ReplyDeleteHomeless people who don't live here.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm.
Doesn't DC sort of belong to the people of the United States? It would seem to me that it's the epitome of a sanctuary city.
ReplyDeleteDC is where they all should go.
ReplyDeleteBet she would accept 1000 illegals and give them a place to live. Typical 2faced DemocRAT.
ReplyDeleteWhat a culture , just like Marion Barry , stupid is as stupid does , homeless has no residence !!
ReplyDeleteHeck I would stay in a hotel too if I didn't have to pay rent or work. At 80k per night you would think someone would be smart enough to build something to house these people. It does NOT need to be lush. Have pods for families with bunk beds. A community shower for all. It would have to be cheaper than 80k per night! If they are in a hotel they can lounge around all day watching tv and not searching for a job. If they were in a shelter they kick them out during the day and make them look for work.
ReplyDeleteI don't blame her. Salisbury should do the same damn thing! They need to go back to their families. It's not up to us to support homeless people.
ReplyDeleteOr pay. Most receive nice ssi checks
DeleteSo turning away people from another state is ok but turning people away from others counties is wrong? How do they justify this?
ReplyDeleteThere must be a few empty warehouses in DC put them up there.
ReplyDeleteway more than a few 10:14am...way more!
ReplyDeleteDems rarely make sense. They do everything in their power to stop the death penalty for criminals who have committed multiple rapes and murders but don't hesitate to allow an innocent unborn child be murdered by abortion.
ReplyDeleteYou have a mental health crisis in this country simply because not enough is understood and expect everyone to fit into the norms of society. This is alot of your homeless population. Get your head out of the clouds some want to be homeless others are down on luck have addiction problems you name it its out there. Dont think legislation will change the problem. Do something to help, this is as low as it gets trying to say they have to go. Go where?
