30-Day Jail Sentences For Boardwalk Melee Suspects

OCEAN CITY — The second batch of defendants arrested after a series of related incidents on the Boardwalk in late July were in court on Thursday on various charges but similar outcomes including 30-day jail sentences.

On July 24, a large crowd of college-age individuals roaming the Boardwalk amid the rest of the big crowd on a hot summer night reached a crescendo with several incidents breaking out in different areas all with a similar theme. The first arrest began around 9:45 p.m. in the area of 1st Street and resulted in multiple arrests. The lawlessness continued with several more incidents reported later in the night in the area of 7th and 8th Streets.

When the dust settled, at least 12 were arrested on various charges with a common theme including second-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstructing and hindering, reckless endangerment and failure to obey a lawful order, for example.

In late August, the first batch of instigators in the near riots went to trial including Kevin Rusten, 26, of Silver Spring, who was the catalyst for the initial incident and what was to follow. Ocean City Police observed Rusten kick over a trash can and drag it to the center of the Boardwalk where he emptied its contents.

  7. People have been fighting in Ocean city for decades. It's not going to stop. Ocean city will do what it takes to protect its "Family Town" image. These idiots were just to stupid to get their hits in and then run.

  8. Most of the charges were about making a******s of themselves, frightening other people and wasting cops' time. The judge makes the call for sentencing, and this is what the judge decided. Spank them and get them out of our county as quickly as we can.

  11. Good for the judge! Only because of it's uniqueness, OC must remain solidly conservative - even a bit harsh - on crimes such as this.
Word will get out, and make them think a moment before acting up again in this town.
If you think it won't, answer this for me:
When is the last time you went over the speed limit on Route 1 going through Bethany Beach? (Locals will understand this completely!)

  12. For 30 days they should be made to pick trash and empty all the trash cans on the boardwalk. Kicking the trash can is what started all this. Don't just let them sit behind bars make it unpleasant as possible so they don't want to go back.

  13. They may be "college age", but I don't think one of them even knows what an SAT test is.

  14. Roof over their heads; 3 meals a day, bed to sleep on, new clothes and shoes.

Best 30 days of their lives!

    1. Unfortunately their goal is to make it "less pleasant" for everyone else. You know, so we don't forget our "white earned privilege".

  16. I hope the NAACP and other anti-white organizations noisily insist on a complete and permanent boycott of OC by every oppressed post-slavery victim of systemic racism and white supremacy.
