OCPD Issues Reminders, Warnings To Car Show Attendees

OCEAN CITY — By mid-week, the steady hum of traffic noise, backups, burnouts and other nuisances related to the arrival of the annual H2O International Car Show had already accelerated, prompting Ocean City police to issue a welcome and a warning.

The annual H2O International (H2Oi) event is one local law enforcement officials and residents circle on their calendars each fall and this year is no different. In years past, the event has been associated with heavy traffic, numerous incidents and violations and in some cases, wanton disregard for the town’s ordinances. The official event is essentially a car show featuring tricked-out Volkswagens and Audis, but like most vehicle-related special events, an in-kind number of unregistered hangers on cause trouble.

To his credit, event organizer Jay Shoup in recent years has issued strong reminders to participants to behave while in the resort area, but his message often falls on deaf ears for those not formally part of the annual event. The H2Oi event is headquartered at Fort Whaley along Route 50 in Whaleyville, but like most vehicle-related special events, there is an in-kind number or often larger number of participants who do not take part in the car show.

Before OC BikeFest two weeks ago, Ocean City police reported the department had reached an agreement with a handful of allied law enforcement agencies in the area to provide an additional police presence in the resort during the event and the same will hold true this weekend during the H2Oi event.

  3. Interesting story.....I wonder if they take the same approach with the hot rod weekend.....h2o doesn't bring nearly the number of cars....the hot rod cars make just as much if not more noise....burn out ect....as far as calling these cars lawnmowers...most of them make as much horsepower as the hotrods....yes they are a different group as far as age and things...but they are car people all the same....I've witnessed as much motorized morons with the hot rods as with the h2o folks....ocean city will keep chasing away the folks who will come and spend money....and they will just roll down to VA beach....is there anyone with half a brain running anything on the eastern shore??????....seems not....

  4. ...Just came off of Coastal Highway in OC... Popo out IN FORCE!
They are doing just what they need to do: Zero tolerance - and a show of force.
    Good for them.
We want everybody to have a good time... Don't let the yahoos ruin it for the majority of the participants.

  6. For those of you with a short memory:
Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach pretty much all but came out and said they did NOT want the Bikers' Week(s) in their towns.
They eventually came to Ocean City years ago and have never looked back.
This town welcomes all - just obey the basic rules is all that asked - so everyone has a good time.

    1. Well if you look at the the events....almost every weekend in VA beach...including their big music festival...played by major acts including Bruce springsteen.....oc can't even get a festival to come...and all they get for spring and fall fest is bands that nobody even remembers any more.....the eastern shore has been chasing the tourists away for years and it's begining to really show....

  7. I don't get what the attraction is about these cars. I get classic car weekend but not this. I was in town yesterday and didn't see anything that caught my eye that was nice. I guess I'm not cool.

  8. The attraction with these cars is you get today's technology....far less expensive than most collector cars....and they can be driven everyday....unlike the average trailer queen classic....just ask one these young people about their car...they built it from scratch so they can tell you...ask the classic car owner the same question....they won't have much of an answer...they pay someone to do the work so they no nothing....
