(PIKESVILLE, MD) – Maryland State Police troopers conducted multiple traffic enforcement operations over the weekend, but despite their efforts, were still called to more than one dozen crashes involving suspected impaired drivers, including one that involved the team leader of the DUI enforcement unit.
During the weekend, troopers statewide made more than 4,700 traffic stops and issued more than 3,100 citations and 3,000 warnings. They were involved in sobriety checkpoints and special enforcement initiatives in various counties. Troopers arrested 71 impaired drivers statewide.
Despite those efforts, troopers were called to respond to 15 crashes that involved suspected impaired drivers. Those crashes included three each in Prince George’s and Howard counties, two each in Charles and Wicomico counties, and one each in Caroline, Harford, Worcester, St. Mary’s and Cecil counties. Although there were multiple injuries, no fatalities occurred in these crashes.
The State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort, or SPIDRE Team, was working DUI enforcement in Prince George’s County, where they arrested seven impaired drivers over two days. The team leader, 1/Sgt. David Ryan, was patrolling Rt. 193 about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, when his patrol vehicle was struck in the right front by a driver changing lanes. The 19-year-old driver had a learner’s permit and was arrested for driving impaired. Neither he nor 1/Sgt. Ryan was injured. This is the second time 1/Sgt. Ryan has been struck by an impaired driver while working DUI enforcement with the SPIDRE Team.
In Howard County, a motorcyclist attempted to drive between two vehicles while traveling east on I-70 at Rt. 29 shortly before noon yesterday. He lost control and was ejected from his motorcycle. The investigation indicates he was driving impaired. When a friend of his, also driving a motorcycle, stopped at the scene of the crash, he was arrested by troopers for operating under the influence.
In Wicomico County, troopers were called to Mt. Hermon Road and Forest Grove Road in Parsonsburg Friday afternoon, for a single vehicle crash involving a moped. The moped operator apparently lost control of the vehicle and fell off. He was subsequently charged with DUI and related traffic charges.
State troopers work daily to identify and remove impaired drivers from Maryland roads. So far this year, Maryland state troopers have made more than 338,200 traffic stops and almost 4,400 arrests for impaired driving. Please do not drink and drive.
Lol Hypocrites.
ReplyDeleteGood, maybe these road pirates will stop walking out into the middle of the highway with traffic going 60+ MPH to pull someone over with their finger (oh that is right, by doing that, they give more tickets)... From my understanding and I could be mistaken, I thought it was against the law for cops to do that in the first place, I thought they had to pull you over using their cars with lights and turn the car a certain way for protection...
ReplyDeleteWhere is the TROOPERS team name ????
ReplyDeleteThey said over 4,700 traffic stops and issued more than 3,100 citations and 3,000 warnings, I didn't take common core so is my math off? 3,100 + 3,000 = 6,100; yes I get that 6,100 is more than 4,700 but they could have added them together and said over or equal to that number, by them downplaying these numbers and the use of wording, they are misleading you people to the amount of harassment the cops actually do... I never see a cop give a warning, even for the drivers very very first traffic offence...
ReplyDeleteSomeone can get a citation for speeding, citation for no seatbelt but a warning for a dead license plate bulb all in the same traffic stop. So not only is your math off, but so is your commonsense lol.
DeleteWonder how many of those "more than a dozen" DUI accidents would have been prevented if the resources wasted on the "sobriety checkpoints and special enforcement initiatives" were used instead for road patrols where they are much more effective?

ReplyDeleteI don't now what the law is but the next time that happens, bend down like you dropped a cig or something.....
You people sound like blm. You have violations and violators and it ends up being the working man's fault (cop).
ReplyDeleteI'm not a member of BLM. I would like to thank LE for protecting my family and keeping drunks off the road. To all LE criminals are cowards and always will be. The negative comments probably were abused as a kid and now they abuse. They are predators and hate LE... Be safe.
ReplyDeleteHey 2:39, instead of spouting off about things you know nothing about, how about staying silent so that you don't look like a moron. It goes like this: they stopped 4,700 cars and issued 6,100 documents. Did you ever stop to think that, during a traffic stop, they can issue a citation AND a warning to the same person? Maybe they stopped someone for speeding and issued a warning but issued a citation for not wearing a seatbelt. Wow, just stop and think before spouting off about things you know nothing about.
ReplyDeleteThere goes everyone's hypothesis that Troopers don't issue warnings and are just there to generate revenue. I'd say that 3,100 citations and 3,000 warnings is pretty fair enforcement. Sounds like balanced policing.
ReplyDeleteBlah blah blah...innocent citizens. Blah blah blah..,.constituitional rights. Blah blah blah....revenue generators. Look, the police have a job to do just like you. You don't see them on here bashing you about the inferior food that you serve at McDonalds or how you cause obesity and heart disease by handing it to people when they order. Just keep asking if everyone would like to "super size" their meal and leave real work to the police.
ReplyDeleteI've received several warnings over the years. Most were from my wife but a few were from police officers that were thankful for my politeness and courtesy towards them. You get what you give.
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn't for the robbers in Emporia VA I wouldn't have a ticket in the last 27 years.
Many years ago, before we were ordered to buckle up, I was riding shotgun with a MSP friend. His radar triggered a speeding car coming toward us, set at a higher number then the speed limit. He turned the police car around and the vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the road. I could see a lady driver, and then saw 2 little girls stand up on the back seat and gave him the the two cutest smiles... ever! When this was over, I said to him, you wrote her a warning did'nt you. You can guess his answer.
