Following a melee in the area of Fourth and Laurel Streets in Pocomoke City on July 29 that resulted in two arrests and one deployed Taser, residents of the neighborhood asked the mayor and City Council this week to institute a curfew in town.
“We need the support of citizens” to enact a curfew, and “the entire council would like to support” such action, Mayor Bruce Morrison said.
Each member of the council nodded in agreement with Morrison’s statement made during the Monday night meeting of mayor and City Council.
The issue has come up before, Morrison continued, but was stymied because of complaints made by the American Civil Liberties Union.
“There are ways to make it work, but you need a lot of exceptions,” City Manager/City Attorney Ernie Crofoot said.

I always had a curfew until leaving our home. It wasn't ordered by any town, it was enacted and enforced by Mom and Dad. They are both gone now, but still with me everyday. Thanks Mom and Dad!!
ReplyDeleteUntil parents can set limits on their children's behaviors and enforce them, the community, including local government, has to take responsibility to protect itself and its people from those children's public behaviors. Kids roaming the streets at all hours of the night is not acceptable behavior. I applaud the city for considering this as a tool to get those kids back into their homes at night, where they belong. If it's the case that those kids don't belong in their homes, then additional resources have to be brought to bear to either remove them from abuse or neglect so that the homes that they will one day have will not be the ones they came from.
ReplyDeleteO good, the government doing the parenting. That sounds like freedom
