WCSO Press Release 7-14-16 (Motor Vehicle Collision

Incident: Motor Vehicle Collision

Date of Incident: 13 July 2016

Location: Pemberton Drive, Salisbury, MD

Narrative: On 13 July 2016, at approximately 8:13 am, deputies from the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office responded to the intersection of Pemberton Drive and Royal Mile Boulevard for a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck. During the investigation it was determined that Lewis Culbertson, 69 of Tyaskin, and his 14 year old grand-daughter were riding on a 2015 Suzuki Boulevard motorcycle traveling east on Pemberton Drive. As they approached the intersection of Royal Mile Blvd. a pickup being driven by William Mengason, 45 of Salisbury, turned into the path of the motorcycle. The motorcycle collided with the pickup causing it to go down under the truck and pinning Culbertson under the motorcycle.

Although both Culbertson and his grand-daughter were wearing helmets, they both suffered significant injuries and they were both air-lifted from the Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Culbertson was flown to Christiana Medical Center, where he is listed in stable, but critical condition, and his grand-daughter was flown to Nemours A.I. DuPont Hospital for Children, were she is listed in stable condition.

The WCSO, Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation into this incident and at this time no charges have been filed. Pemberton Drive was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was investigated.

    1. You shouldn't believe everything you hear. People are very ignorant and the driver and his family I'm sure are very devastated as well

    2. I have known this man for several years and find him to be nothing but a great guy. He does NOT drink or do drugs. He does go to church and he does support this community. He is not perfect like any of us but he is a good father and husband. If he has been an A to you perhaps he just calls it likes he see it. The fact that you would post such a vicious rumor in the midst of a terrible accident shows exactly what kind of person you are. A post such as your is beyond ignorant and make you a very small person.

  2. Prayers for all involved.. motorcyclist always make me nervous especially when you are parked waiting for a light and they just ride their "bikes" thru to get to the front or speed down the highway racing each other. I know not all cyclists do this but the ones who do need to stop immediately.

My uncle was killed when he was stopped at a red light on his "bike" and a tractor trailer hit him from behind and killed him. After that I try to be extra extra extra careful when I hear or see motorcyclist on the roadway.

  4. Such a sad and tragic accident...Hopefully, this will help the folks that live in West Nithsdale and Nithsdale realize that the big red sign at the end of your development means STOP, not yield!!! I have someone pull out in front of me EVERY day on Pemberton Drive. It was only a matter of time before someone was seriously injured. Please, people, take the time to slow down, stop and look again! Prayers to all the people involved and their families.

  5. That stretch of road is even more dangerous since they are taking their sweet time repairing Rt. 349.

  6. Let's be more concerned about the recovery of the ones hurt!! This man doesn't use drugs and hasn't drank in two years!! I'm sure he feels terrible and doesn't need you all running him down

  7. Why not ask Mike Lewis why they have yet to file charges against the driver? There is a two vehicle collision, one where the driver of the pick up pulled into the path of the motorcycle operator, with witnesses stating such. Maybe a failure to yield right of way to oncoming traffic at the minimum? Or I guess it is possible that they are giving it time to see how the motorcycle operator/passenger respond to medical treatment to see if additional charges should be filed against the driver of the truck? Sound like a crazy thought? Of course it does, because the driver of the truck is personal friends with Mike Lewis. Maybe that's why there has been no fault or charges filed. Lewis loves dirty business and politics.
