The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services began using a comprehensive escape alert system in 2009, allowing residents living near correctional facilities operated by the department to receive an automatic email, text message, or phone call alert in the event of an escape. 

Recently, the department contracted with a new company for the service. While the new system allows for added features and faster alert times, it also means members of the public who were previously signed up for alerts must sign up again under the new system.
