Fewer People Are Starting Their Own Businesses

Reversing growth in small business activity for the first time in four years.

Bad news for aspiring entrepreneurs: Now might not be the best time to launch your own business.

Total entrepreneurial activity in the U.S.—measured by the number of people starting and operating new businesses—fell to 12% in 2015, from 14% in 2014, according to a report released Tuesday by Babson College. The drop reverses upward growth in small business activity during the previous four years.

The findings could indicate that employees are satisfied with their jobsand unwilling to strike out on their own. But the research could also show a lack of confidence in the small business environment in the wake of the recession, Babson professor Donna Kelley told CNBC. The Small Business Optimism Index, a metric from the National Federation of Independent Business, has remained below its 42-year average since the recession.

  1. This is a given. The same thing happened in the late 70s with Carter. People don't want to open businesses now more than ever. Too many regulations and taxes to deal with. Either go solo or work for the man. Who wants to employ people anymore?

  2. Is it just me, or does everyone realize the economy is in terrible shape? I mean, it is worse than 2009 in my opinion.

    What do you guys think?

  3. Yea I would rather work for an employer that doesn't give raises, benefits and treats you like dirt.

Its a stupid article, I could not get past the headlining paragraphs. They don't know why, so they make crap up and admit that they didn't bother to ask people the reason behind it

How about, there is no money there to take the risk with because we are all drowning, barely able to hang on.

    Hows that for an answer.

  4. 357 The economy is beyond horrible shape. It's about to bottom out completely thanks to Liberals and their BS. They have inflated the entitlements while diminishing wage earners. As PM Margaret Thatcher said, "The problem with Socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money." No doubt that's exactly what's happened here now. It's not tomorrow or next month. It's one of the reasons why the elderly is having to live on less income than even welfare people. The coffers are drying up and yet, we're giving $150B of non-existent money to Iran.

  5. I have been in business over 25 years and I can assure you it is no longer rewarding. When I started my profession wasn't even regulated; now we have 300 pages of single spaced regulations. Furthermore, I'm not convinced the service we provide is any better. Secondly, there has been a big shift in rewards. ie. When I started the private sector earned more than our government counerparts. Now that has reversed. Bottomline the incentive to start a business is gone, particularly here in Maryland!

  6. It's still 2009 and it's not getting any better.

Please give Mr. Donald Trump a go in November.

The alternative will surely continue the downward spiral.
