Common Core Does Not Prepare Students for College, New Report Finds

A recently released report confirms what Common Core critics have suspected all along: Common Core State Standards do not adequately prepare students for college-level work.

The ACT report finds many concerning shortcomings in the Common Core State Standards, which have been adopted by most states. Notably, the report reveals:

“While secondary teachers may be focusing on source-based writing [essays written about source-based documents], as emphasized in the Common Core, college instructors appear to value the ability to generate sound ideas more than some key features of source-based writing.
“Some early elementary teachers are still teaching certain math topics omitted from the Common Core standards, perhaps based on the needs—real or perceived—of students entering their classrooms.
“In addition, many mathematics teachers in grades 4–7 report including certain topics relevant in STEM coursework in their curricula at grades earlier than they appear in the Common Core.”

Teachers who must adjust their curriculum to fit Common Core aligned state tests now find themselves in a bind. As the report finds, the Common Core math standards do not adequately provide a child with the skills needed to succeed in the classroom, forcing teachers to add on extra material to their limited instruction time.

Additionally, high school English teachers must now emphasize material that leaves students lacking in original thought and analytical skills, according to many college professors. For example, only 18 percent of college professors surveyed rated their students as prepared to distinguish between opinion, fact, and reasoned judgement—a skill determined to be important for college-level work.

  1. That's right dumb them down and brain wash them. They have lowered standards so much in the past thirty years in public school that all you have to do is watch these guy in the street interviews to see how stupid these kids are. Even college graduates they know nothing about history or current events. They protest but don't even know what they are protesting. They are dumber than a box of rocks.

  4. It's preparing the kids to be good little brain washed socialists with the ultimate goal of being more easily absorbed into a new world order and being obedient to the elite without any critical objective thought as to why. Yes it does start in the government schools.

  5. it doesn't prepare them for anything. it's like learning klingon or whatever that nerd language is and trying to sign in german. it just doesn't make sense.

  6. Look from a broader perspective.
Proof is in the pudding, liberals have controlled education K through Doctoral studies now for 40 years.
Liberals do not prepare children for real life, let alone college.

  8. 11:43 This isn't about being liberal or conservative - it's about the parents taking some responsibility for making sure their child is educated. I happen to be liberal and education is the most important aspect of my life right now. We have pulled our child from the public schools and are homeschooling her to ensure that she actually receives a decent education. We went to a town hall meeting yesterday to learn more about the medical cannabis facility starting up on Route 50. My daughter was the only child there. Why is that? Because parents (both liberal and conservative) are too wrapped up in themselves to attend such an event and to bring their children. My ten year old sat and listened for the entire two hours. She is expected to listen and think for herself. I don't disagree with you that the school system is not preparing our children for college, but it's not a liberal vs conservative debate. There are plenty of people from both sides of the isle that are failing to prepare our children for life and college.

  9. 1:39 PM - Bravo to you for getting your child involved, or at least listening to what's happening instead of ignoring it or getting it from the MSM, our local outlets being some of the worst at delivering true news without a chosen slant.
