McDonald's has until mid-June to respond to a federal lawsuit accusing it of discrimination for refusing to serve blind customers who walk up during late-night hours when only the drive-thru window is open.
The plaintiff, Scott Magee of Metairie, Louisiana, said in court documents filed in U.S. District Court in Chicago that he was laughed at and turned away from the drive-thru window at a McDonald's in the New Orleans suburb late at night last August. It wasn't the first time that had happened, Magee alleged.
Many McDonald's restaurants nationwide continue service through their drive-thru windows late at night after the main restaurant entrance has closed
But the company's policy is not to serve pedestrians at the drive-thru, and blind customers can't drive, so they're effectively barred from patronizing the world's largest fast food chain by revenue, according to the suit, which seeks class-action status for all blind Americans who may have had difficulty ordering at McDonald's.

Good for him! And they should install pedestrian-only "drive-up" windows at all McDonald's! Blind people gotta eat crap at midnight too!!
ReplyDeleteBunch of oculaphobes!!
So? Go to a Wendys instead and quit bitching.
ReplyDeleteThis lawsuit will affect every other drive thru restaurant,so how can he win? Any issue that challenges national policy such as this issue must ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court.

ReplyDeleteHey Barney..... How is he gonna know the difference? For all he knows he was at a Wendy's!
ReplyDeleteStupid law suits.
ReplyDeleteHow did he know it was mcds
ReplyDeleteBlind on drugs and booze . If he was blind , how in the hell could he find the McDonalds much less the window.
ReplyDeleteI can't see Wendy's from here!
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm about to say won't add anything meaningful to this conversation but here it goes anyway.
ReplyDeleteMany years ago while visiting friends in Daytona Beach we went to the drive through and my buddy (who was driving) asked for a braille menu and proceeded to order from it. The look on the people inside was priceless!
This is one I hope McD's wins. The only reason they have the rule in the first place is because pedestrians kept getting hit. While a walk up window would be nice. I don't see how he can win this. (No pun intended).
ReplyDeleteMotorcycle can use drive thru. Can a bicycle? Motorized scooter? Horse n buggy? Skateboard with engine on it? Hooverboard? Special person with trike bike? Pedestrian getting hurt is bs. Many McDonald's have parking lots that you must walk across the drive thru lane to enter rest.
ReplyDeleteAlways exercise caution when placing a stigma on disabilities.Stigma eventually turns into resentment.
ReplyDeleteAh the world of nuance lawsuits. When lawyers start sprouting a conscience, perhaps these types of nonsense will end. Until them, we'll just have to shake our heads and commend their ignorance.
