University Of Md. Campus Police Accused Of Racism

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (WJZ) — There are accusations of racism at one of Maryland’s premiere public universities after campus police used pepper spray to break up a graduation party.

The University of Maryland’s president is promising swift action for students who believe they were racially profiled.

Ava-joye Burnett has more on this rapidly evolving story.

It’s the encounter with campus police at a graduation party that has everyone from the administration to students and even famous alumni demanding answers.

Cell phone video shows the chaos as University of Maryland police used pepper spray to break up a graduation party. Police say someone called and reported a fight at the off-campus complex but when they arrived, students denied that ever happened.

Most of the people at the party were black and, as the video made the rounds online, people started to question if race played a role.

  3. The loud partiers causing the disturbance were black. The police were called. They resisted breaking up the party. They got pepper sprayed.

If it wasn't white people causing the noise and the rowdiness, how the hell is that "profiling"?

  5. When assistance is requested for any incident, it matters not what race the law may be or what race the citizens are in the incident.

A request to quell is just that. A handles B and everyone goes home or to state storage.

So sick of hearing black, black, black. Hey black, do you think I am to think more or less of you when you make unwarranted accusations? I don't know what you think, but I think you are a whining, punk culture....There, and my impression is getting worse each day. I am a white boy and have black friends that do not act as you do.

    1. I have white friends and they wouldn't dare make that ignorant statement "a whining, punk culture; impression is getting worse each day." Why don't you tell your black friends how you really feel???
