Rally calls for Baltimore National Aquarium to free dolphins

BALTIMORE (AP) — Calling for the release of dolphins at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, about two dozen protesters gathered outside the complex Saturday and held up signs seeking to raise awareness about whales and dolphins in captivity.

The Baltimore Sun (http://bsun.md/23y3acd ) reports the demonstration was part of an international event called Empty The Tanks Worldwide. Organizers say events were planned at 61 locations across 22 countries.

In 2012, the National Aquarium eliminated its high-flying dolphin show in favor of a more relaxed exhibit.

  1. There's a mixed outcome when releasing sea mammals to the wild after years of being penned, very often not happy.

  3. If you release the dolphins, why dont you release all the other fish? If you release one, you should release them all.

  4. Summerland Marina had one that put on shows back in the day, then they took down the fence/ gate. The dolphin came back often to put on a show. If you threw a dime out as far as you could, the dolphin would go after it and return with the dime on its nose for you! I swam with it several times.

  5. 12:08 They are mammals, not fish. They are intelligent and are known to teach, learn, cooperate, scheme, and grieve. It is a shame to keep them caged up but let animals run around in the streets of Baltimore.
