Wicomico County Humane Society - Press Release

Wicomico County Animal Control continues to process legal documentation as required by the State’s Attorney’s Office. They anticipate this task being completed today. Some animals have already been released to the Humane Society of Wicomico County (HSWC) The HSWC has begun a process to transfer dogs to other Humane Societies to lessen the burden on the shelter..

The current needs for the Humane Society of Wicomico County are the following items: Wet/Canned Dog Food (PLEASE DO NOT DONATE DRY BAGGED DOG FOOD) Dog/Puppy Treats Fabuloso Cleaner (Purple) Gallons of Bleach Chlorox Cleaner Spray Bleach Paper Towels Liquid Dishwashing Soap Liquid Laundry Detergent Puppy Pads for lining kennels (PLEASE DO NOT DONATE NEWSPAPERS)

These items can be dropped off at the following locations and times: Humane Society of Wicomico County 5130 Citation Drive Salisbury, MD 21804 At the front doors from Monday to Saturday 11 am to 4 pm

Monetary donations can be made from the Humane Society’s webpage using the Pay Pal link. www.wicomicohumane.org Please do not use other websites. This ensures the funds come directly to the Humane Society of Wicomico County. The funds will be used for the overwhelming expenses of medications, grooming, and other care for our animals.

The Humane Society website (www.wicomicohumane.org) will be updated as animals become available for adoption. Please do not call our shelter as our staff is busy caring for the animals. Thank you for your support. As a reminder, each animal has to be examined, vaccinated, groomed, micro chipped, and spay/neutered before it can be adopted.

For further information regarding animal care contact via email: execdirector@wicomicohumane.org Questions regarding legal charges should be directed to the State’s Attorney’s Office at 410-548-4880

There will be a press conference today (4/13) at 3:00 pm at our location in the front parking lot pavilion. Further updates will be issued daily.

  1. In looking at the animals available for adoption, it looks like 90% of them are pit bulls or pit mixes. That says something about the previous owners.

    1. they name just about ALL dogs, pits or pit mixes. They said that about the last 3 dogs my mom adopted and none of them had any pit in them. They just call them pitmix when they have no clue what they are,

  3. 1:42 something like 80% of shelter dogs are pit or pit mixes and almost all dogs euthanized in shelters are pits or pit mixes but the so called "pit lovers" and "advocates" are against breed specific legislation which could require mandatory spay/neutering thereby dramatically cutting down on the numbers killed by shelters each year. If they really love the breed they would be screaming for legislation because anyone who can allow millions of what they profess to love to be put down in shelters in such numers is a sick demented person.

    1. Are you daft??? No law will ever stop people from breeding ANY dog as long as there's money in it. There's money in dog shows as well as selling puppies and dogfighting.
BSL is BS...plain and simple. It is a death sentence for existing pitties because of the stigma and not being allowed to have one in a rented home or neighborhood. Those "breed lovers" are also trying to save lives by rescuing the ones who are already alive as well as promote spay neutering. If you want a particular breed, then try a breed specific rescue FIRST. There are more than you could imagine.

  4. @1:42 the dogs rescued from this puppy mill are not on the website for adoption yet. They will have to be tended to medically and most likely spade or neutered before becoming eligible for adoption. The pits you see are just regulat shelter dogs who need a good home. Pits, while given a bad rap, are often some of the sweetest, kindest, most gentle dogs you could own. Open your closed mind a litte - maybe go help out and walk one of these pits.

    1. I was making reference to how much indiscriminate Pit breeding there is, and how many of the breed are given up by those same breeders.

  6. 10:29 The pit problem has gotten so big there is absolutely no way the breed lovers can rescue and adopt their way out of it. Another thing everyone is on puppy mills but the fact is there are way more unscrupulous "rescues" out there than there are puppy mills.
Another thing people aren't breeding pits to make money. It's people (who have no business getting a puppy) getting one from a friend's unexpected litter, or for $35 off of Craigslist, etc and the problem morphs. At the very least people should have to register pit/pit mixes and be required to spay/neuter them. A few years ago someone was giving pit puppies away out of the trunk of their car in the Pocomoke Walmart parking lot.
