I've been teaching for the past 11 years, so it's hard for me to not jump in..
ReplyDeleteThere are two particular things that drive me nuts:
'Media' is PLURAL (like radio, TV and newspapers are all MEDIA); the singular form is 'medium'
If I graduated from a college, I am an 'alumnus' of said college. My classmates and I are 'alumni' (plural.. do you see?)

Grammar is one of the things that makes reading/scrolling through Facebook a nightmare. Not only is the younger generation having problems with this, it is also lacking in the 30 plus group.

Whole nother is an eastern Shore favorite.

Yes, this is very enjoyable, and could go on forever!
It's a wonderful language, and it evolves. Its life and beauty are rapidly being snuffed under a pillow of easy and lazy grammar and spelling.
ReplyDeleteI would guess that a fair number of the teachers don't do much better than the students. Maybe that has something to do with it.
ReplyDeleteOne very common thing people do in my area is use an apostrophe like a paper clip to attach an 's' to a word.
Jack brought his dog's along for the ride.
You even see it in a newspaper occasionally. (Don't get me started about newspapers..)
Apostrophe abusers. What are they thinking?
ReplyDelete2:38 PM - Good point. Those license plate frames with the college name and "alumni" are annoying.
ReplyDeleteBut, to offer more to your explanation, you're an alumnus only if you're a male. Alumni are either all males or of mixed gender. Females each are alumna, and in plural, alumnae.

I think of it this way: Affect is a verb form ("A" for Action)
Effect is a noun form.. I think of "sound effects"
This error is probably one of the most widespread at this point. You see it everywhere, even on signs, in manuals, and in magazines and newspapers.
The group of people that tend to misuse these words, belong to one ethnicity.
