Amid Tight State Budgets, Black Colleges Seek White, Latino, Asian Students

New graduates of Bowie State University in Maryland. Many historically black colleges and universities are aggressively recruiting non-black students to boost enrollment.

Faced with stalled state funding, Harry Williams, the president of Delaware State University, a historically black public university, had to get creative: He slashed a quarter of the school’s academic programs and began aggressively recruiting students who aren’t black.

He’s gone as far as China to strike agreements with universities there that will bring Chinese exchange students to Delaware State to study.

“It’s a revenue generator for us and a way of marketing the university,” Williams said of the school’s international recruiting. “We’re definitely committed to our heritage and our history. But we had to make sure that we were relevant and have programs that would attract students.”

Delaware State isn’t the only of the public historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to reach beyond a tradition of educating primarily African-American students as a way of making ends meet in a time of tight state budgets and changing racial and ethnic demographics.

  3. Many colleges are overrun with the kids of rich foreigners, because they pay full tuition.
No concern for how their presence affects the campus or the community. Just how much $$ they pay.

I pity the white students who try to go to a HBCU (black) school like UMES. They won't last one year.

  5. Yeah, my white kid won't be. Sorry. Is what it is, and I won't set him up to be a target. Maybe the colleges should let people in who actually want to work for an education, not concentrate on one predominate race. Those people of all races are out there.

  8. Black college? I thought we were not allowed to have a WHITE college, but these people can have a black college. I would not want to be white going to such as that. They will open themselves to an attack. I guess that is what happens when all of the students go there for free. No profit. Looks like it did not workout, huh? Now you need the white mans money.
