I am not opposed to education but I have found if you pay for it you may actually look after it. Education should be affordable and I am including college and vocational education. Teachers are valuable I don't understand the giant spread between teachers, college teachers/professors and the administration who by what I have seen are only paid less than the athletic department. Affordable yes free I don't think is a good idea. I don't think paying for a veterans education is free in my opinion and observations they have more than earned their place is a classroom.
One thing that people have to remember, in Socialist societies, kids have to take tests throughout school in order to go onto the next level. They don't have a choice of whether or not to go to college. The GOVERNMENT decides whether or not they go on to higher learning based on their test score. If they fail these tests, they will be sent to a trade school of the government's choice depending on its need for certain trades at a given time. Hence, why the governments (for a period of time) can afford to pay the bill.
Furthermore, bear in mind, you also can't go to college on the 12 year plan as some students opt to do in this country. You have a specific amount of time AND you aren't going to some place like Oxford unless you can afford to pay out of pocket.
So, while it may sound like a super coolio deal, it's really not. You become human collateral of the government. There will be no free Harvard or Princeton. We're talking about community college which can prepare you for secretarial or bookkeeping work. If you want to be a doctor or lawyer, your tuition will not be free and you'll have to pass the tests to even consider such a profession. If you don't take tests well, then you're just out of luck. Sorry folks.
Seriously would behoove you all to learn about what socialism really is before rushing head on into a huge concrete wall, eyes wide shut.
740 average teacher in Maryland retires full pension at 30 years. Usually 70 120k anual income. Retirees get 62 percent plus 401k and social security. The information open to view on Maryand website. College professor a SU teaching business for 25 years makes 92k. Teachers are paid very well.
I do not believe in a free college education. The poster is correct. The numbers of high school graduates who have to take remedial english and math courses at WWCC is horrific. Those courses were originally meant to be for older students who needed a refresher, but they have become a staple for incoming freshmen. The "free" education could be earned just as veterans do. I would like to see the selective service system used for all, with options available for national service to include the military and non-military service. This could include service in an emergency corps to help out with disasters, fire fighting training for forest fires, service in Veterans Hospitals, Americorps, revive the Civilian Conservation Corp for working in state and national parks and who knows what else. Let them earn it and they will respect it.
