Poll: Millennials Pick Socialism Over Capitalism

A new survey from YouGov finds that millennials have more favorable views of socialism than of capitalism.

As Santayana said, those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it. Less than two decades after socialism seemed to have been confined to the dust-heap of history, another generation may have to learn hard lessons.

The survey, taken at the end of January, found that 43 percent of Americans under 30 had a favorable view of socialism. Less than a third of millennials had a favorable view of capitalism. No other age or ethnic demographic preferred socialism over capitalism.

Seniors, unsurprisingly, had the most favorable view of capitalism. Just 23 percent of Americans older than 65 had a positive view of socialism. Sixty-three percent of seniors, though, had a favorable view of capitalism.

Seniors, after all, experienced the long-standing intellectual battle between capitalism and socialism played out in real life. They witnessed a post-war economic euphoria grind down into a socialist malaise, only to be reinvigorated by a global embrace of disruptive technology, deregulation, and global trade.

In the past 20 years, the number of people living in poverty worldwide has fallen by half. In 1990, 43 percent of the world’s population lived in extreme poverty. In 2013, the United Nations estimated that just 22 percent of the world’s population continued to live in extreme poverty.

“Never in history have the living conditions and prospects of so many people changed so dramatically and so fast,” the UN Human Development report said.

Even if millenials aren’t swayed by the dramatic improvement in worldwide living standards, one would hope they would see the benefits of capitalism in the products and services that inhabit their world.

  1. when you pay little to no taxes you are easily swayed by the promise of FREE stuff. it is when you are crushed by taxes that you understand the reality of the situation.

  7. With the current presidential candidates you can't blame them.

  8. The brain washing through public education and universities is almost complete. One more generation without some serious changes will seal the deal and make turning back almost impossible. Unless you utilize the Weather Undergrounds plan to re educate conservatives on the looney liberal instead. But that's none of my business.

  9. 12:57 This is why anyone who receives ANY assistance through the government, should not be allowed to vote or hold public office. In any way.

  10. 1257 take a look how corrupt it is. You want to raise taxes and give the money to the govt to disperse?! So more govt control is what you want. Not me. Trump 2016

  11. 12:57 SS is a trust fund which is funded by individual taxpayers to have retirement money at retirement time. Notice YOU put in YOUR money over the years to collect a retiremnet payout when it is time. It was not based on sucking money out of everybody else to pay for you, like straight-up socialism does. It is not the people's fault that the corrupt government has stolen all the money from the fund and replaced it with IOUs. Please don't be a fool and vote for Bernie or Hillary (an honest socialist or a dishonest socialist).

  12. I think 12:57 needs to go back to school. I worked and paid into ss for 40 years. Myself and my employer paid into the system for what I'm now drawing out. I was also forced into medicare which I had no choice. So maybe 12:57 needs to educate themselves before making their comments.

  13. Yea and see what they have to say about it after they have to start working then see what's left from their paycheck after the crooked government takes their share first.
Bet they will be singing a different tune then

  14. In the millenials defense, everything that they have witnessed concerning capitalism has been a failure. Having never seen the benefit, it is very diffucult to realize that it can work, if not strangled by government regulations. That is exactly what makes this election so important.

  17. 12:57 AND 1:16.......Are you really THAT stupid, or just trying to anger people who were FORCED (under the threat of criminal punishment) to give part of their paycheck to the government, who THEN TOOK that money, spent it something else (welfare benefits for illegal immigrants and SSI for them too??? thank you Jimmy Carter!).
According to 1:16, if you DID work for forty years but are now retired an collecting you SSI, you should not be allowed to vote ????
THAT is an unbelievably idiotic position to take.
CAPTITALISM took a few colonies and transformed them into the greatest economic and military power the world has EVER seen. EVER.
    In about 200 years.
Nothing comes even close to that performance. Not socialism, Marxism, or communism.
Unfortunately, 12:34 is telling the truth.....we don't have capitalism any more. We have a corporatocracy.....big money, banks, and corporate behemoths run the government. "We, the people"?

    Don't stand a chance.....
And we brought it on ourselves, with the unbridled
    Cheering.
THIS TIME (wink wink), we are going to REALLY "change things".

  18. That's because most are part of the welfare crowd getting free education and other government assistance.

  19. "Seems to me there are an awful lost of seniors picking Socialism as well in the form of Social Security and Medicare."

I'll make you a deal Einstein. You give me back what has been confiscated from my paycheck (adjusted for inflation) and we'll call it even.

  20. 12:57 is a typical Dumbocrat Liar. Why don't you try getting the facts on SS and Medicare. Probably in line right now getting free crap and selling it for drugs which has made his grey matter disappear.

  21. Because they are lazy unmotivated losers... I hope they get it and end up slaves as they deserve.

  22. I don't know any senior citizens who refuse Medicare and insist on paying their own expensive insurance premiums.
