One-Third of Lawyers Have Drinking Problem

Drinking problems, depression and anxiety are common among American lawyers, a new study finds.

An anonymous survey of more than 12,800 licensed, working lawyers in 19 states revealed that one-third are problem drinkers, 28 percent have depression, and 19 percent have symptoms of anxiety, The New York Times reported.

The study by the American Bar Association and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation appears in the February issue of the Journal of Addiction Medicine.

  1. Aaah, the cost of being in a sleezebag profession. Can't rely on truth, morals, or ethics to guide them. Only money, and what their clients will pay them to avoid justice (or government regulations). Anything, and I mean ANYTHING, to win in court. Wonder why they drink to excess....I don't. If they have any morals at all, then they must experience more cognitive dissonance than most other professionals.

  3. There are no checks and balances for the profession at all. A lawyer could be depressed, or have dementia and still represent people in court. It is up to the public to judge for themselves and that can be difficult. The average person has no recourse other than ask around but even that is a risk because people don't want to get involved.

  8. 307 you can file compliant with license board. They will be investigated often found guilty. Several local attorney have gotten suspended before... Keep a log of all calls and conversation with the scum bag. If they fail on giving a 100 percent to your case file compliant.
