EASTON — Drug arrests by the Talbot County Sheriff’s Office increased nearly 500 percent in 2015 compared to 2014.
The sheriff’s office and the Talbot County Narcotics Task Force charged more than 250 people with drug offenses, while there were 54 charged in 2014, according to the sheriff’s office.
The rise in drug arrests comes after the county’s new sheriff, Joe Gamble, has been in office for a year. He was elected on a promise to attack the county’s drug issues, mainly the heroin scourge.
Gamble said the stats don’t mean the county had a worse drug problem in 2015 than in 2014. It previously was not a focus of enforcement, he said.
