Teacher Causes Panic At Parkside

If video fails to load for you click on the title of this post
The video you are about to see is just about the scariest example of what NOT to do during a bomb threat evacuation.
Once the students had gathered in groups outside the school, "a teacher yelled, drop everything and run".
I have to tell you, these children were scared for their lives and this is not funny.
It's no wonder so many Parents have had it and are not sending their kids back to school.
And Sheriff Mike Lewis wants to turn decision making on emergency situations up to Superintendent John Fredericksen?
Yeah, Salisbury News and that Joe Albero is a bad guy, I don't think so. You are NOT seeing this anywhere else. The video was taken by a student at Parkside and every single parent needs to look at this and challenge the BOE.
If it wasn't for Salisbury News, only a hand full of people would know the Board of Education is nowhere near trained enough to handle emergency situations.
This is why I have strongly urged our Legislators to please create a state wide protocol or at least encourage the state wide Boards of Education to start training these teachers in proper procedures.
That looks like a student not a Teacher?
ReplyDeleteJoe is right on this. something needs to be done.
ReplyDelete9:48, The TEACHER yelled run and the kids started running. The kid took the video and if you look carefully you will see other students running for their life.
ReplyDeleteTo those of you saying this did not happen, it did. I refuse to publish your naive comments because you are wrong and you weren't there. I have two sources who have confirmed this.
Joe you are so right. keep the naive comments off here. You keep up the good job. I love sbynews and what you do for salisbury. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThe POS teacher needs to be identified and arrested and fired ASAP.
ReplyDeleteThis is a perfect example of what we the Parents of Parkside students have been venting about! This is the reason my son was picked up from that school during the last bomb threat, and has not returned yet!
ReplyDeleteWhat's the teachers name and why hasn't he/she been arrested.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the teacher did panic. When all of this started obviously it created panic. Not all people can handle stressful events And yes that includes teachers. Some handle it better than others.
ReplyDeleteI am 9:48 - I wasn't bashing or saying this didn't happen. I was just pointing out that this kid who took this video, had time to start video, (with a smile on face), and continue to scream while laughing,Screaming and Videoing. I wish there was more to this and if Teacher did scream something out of context then it shouldn't be hard to find out name, why or what they screamed and the actions they are taking against them. Maybe this video will bring more of the story out in the open.

Then DO NOT BECOME A TEACHER!!! You are there to teach and keep order! If you can not handle a stressful situation then DO NOT take a job where stress is thrown at you everyday! Do not make excuses! This teacher needs to be fired!
To the person/s saying the kid is laughing. People grieve differently and they also express being scared differently. Some people get a thrill from horror movies and some get scared to death. Just because the kid taking the video is making fun of what's going on, I can assure you that other kids were scared to death.
ReplyDeleteI have spoken to another very mature student who called me this morning and said while she did not see this happen, she was not in that group and kids were scattered all around the school. She admitted there was absolutely no control and kids were simply walking off school grounds and going home. She also stated that parents were pulling up and taking groups of kids off school property.
She also admitted they were stuck outside in the cold for two hours.
Now some of you can say this was a joke, you are wrong. I'll repeat, look at the video a few more times and see ALL of the kids running. Just because one kid made a joke of this happening does not mean other kids weren't scared to death.
Finally, after you see all these kids running, do tell me that after all of you went to school any of this would be acceptable and or under control. Spin it any way you want, I have witnesses that confirm the teacher told them to drop everything and run. The video proves just that.
Oh, and stop coming on here saying you are a Parkside teacher when you are clearly at work teaching and not viewing a Blog.
ReplyDeleteI want to know how kids just get in cars and go home without anyone verifying who they are, and also kids just walking home? Some people need to be FIRED.
Delete100 staff and 1200+ students... We can't physically hold them in place and some were totally disregarding directions. That's how it happened.
DeleteI think that we all need to regularly practice running for our lives. It's for when we run out of ammunition.
ReplyDeleteTrue or False? A teacher has stated that when teachers are instructed to lock the classroom doors many of the teachers do not have keys to their classroom door locks. No one seems to know where the keys are?
ReplyDeleteMany teachers 'float' from room to room all day and are not given keys to the rooms they use. The rooms at our school can also only be locked from the outside. Door must be opened and locked with a key.
DeleteIT DID HAPPEN! My son came home and told me those EXACT WORDS of what teacher said to do. He said he had a panic attack and some kids were crying.

ReplyDeleteJoe,
Re: the Parkside video you posted. A number of observations from an adult who was present during both of the recent threats, speaking as a private citizen. Have been through numerous drills in other jobs including managerial duties; not in that capacity here.
First point. Parkside staff could well be posting today, though not from school; it was cancelled today at 5:30 a.m. Your comment at 11:09 was inaccurate in that regard. Keep reading.
Timeline: Evacuation about 12:50, per my recall. Call to my phone from WCBOE at 1:34 announcing situation; same call as went through the community. Around 2:10 our radio holder was advised that all-clear was likely in a few minutes. Students were back inside in time for buses to run on schedule. Total time outside was just short of 1 ½ hours.
Looks like a video selfie taken behind the school on a field adjacent to the track, and clearly at a distance from the building. The person shown up close is not a staff member. The majority of students have phones that can take video. They started texting and calling parents immediately after getting outside. If you are able, and if the video device’s time was accurate when taken (likely since most have auto time set), you may be able to see when it was filmed. I haven’t tried to check this. My educated guess is that this clip was shot well after the students had evacuated and when boredom and chill had started to set in. The day was overcast with temps around 50 and a breeze; not bad at the get-go but many didn’t have jackets and were not dressed for winter. After a few minutes I’m sure some got restless.
My recall is that the alarm sounded about 12:50 pm. Oddly enough I had just finished reading on your blog about other threats occurring in the district that day on my device.
At my area everyone was outside in under a minute, calm and collected; our students and staff maintained that attitude the entire time outside. PHS has a few entrances but numerous exit points on all sides of the building so the occupants are widely dispersed in a drill. Just as many students are restive and less than attentive in the classroom, when given fewer constraints outside immaturity sets in.
I did not have a direct view of the area where this was filmed while we were outside. Bear in mind also this was a Friday afternoon leading into a holiday weekend when you evaluate the student mind-set and behaviors. The ongoing discussion about discipline and consequences also lurks in the background when the immature are given free rein.
I can’t prove or disprove your assertion about the panic remark but it seems inconsistent with previous drills and staff I know. Bear in mind also that by Friday everyone (staff and students) knew these calls were going around the region and that none had proved out.
Thanks for listening,
IF I thought a bomb was in the building and children and adults have the possibility of getting killed, I would have said run like your life depended on it to.. teachers are not crisis interventionists or first responders, they are teachers and that is their job.. walk a mile in their shoes before you cast judgment because if the teacher has just said lets evacuate the building calmly and the students had taken their time and there was a BOMB and some of those students got hurt then that would be a problem too. . pick your battles this teacher got the students out safely. I am one of the parents who picked my child up before I was even notified by the school system! They may want to take chances with their own lives but not with my child's life.
ReplyDelete1:55, You said: teachers are not crisis interventionists or first responders, they are teachers and that is their job".
ReplyDeleteThen they should TEACH our children to be orderly just like ALL of us were taught years ago.
If you can't TEACH, get out of the business.
When we were kids we were TAUGHT to calmly walk out of the building in a single file. Once we got to our location we were taught to stand one arm length apart from other students.
There was never a teacher freaking out and yelling. There was never students running off like their lives depended on it.
Maybe parents should be teaching values at home before expecting teachers to do everything!!
DeleteThen when you do get that one teacher who tried to keep order amongst the unruliness, they have to worry about the parents whining about being too hard on their children or being sue happy.
You want teachers to be perfect then you better raise perfect children!
Something is wrong with the college level teaching system that have given teaching certificates to inept people who have less skills than the home daycare mother who just hung out a shingle with no training. Where do these people get their degrees....cracker jack?
ReplyDeleteJoe teachers and pupils today are totally different than they were when you and/or I were in school. .
ReplyDeleteJoe,
ReplyDeleteDo you remember what happened to the students who didn't walk or didn't stay in line or didn't remain quiet/calm? I remember students being yanked around by their ears. I remember a teacher called "the claw" because she had long fingernails that would dig into your arm when you were messing up. One memorable moment was a principle who picked up a couple of boys by their shirts, carried them back to the row of chairs they had just left, lifted them over the first row to place them firmly back in their seats in the second row and said "NOW WALK!". If teachers/principles did that today, they would be fired and sued. Thus, kids pay them no mind.
Sorry, this video looks like a kid acting out to me. I am retired now but I have over thirty years of observing kids and noting that they don't always follow directions or behave themselves. I don't think this kid was scared of anything. Some kids can really act out.
ReplyDeleteThe ones that are can be copying their parents. we have seen some incredible emotional adult fright or pretend fright on here since this started right in the comments.
I asked my granddaughter today if she was frightened by the bomb threats. She said no. I think a major reason for that is her parents are setting a proper example of commonsense and courage. I am proud of that girl. I am proud of her whole family.
I was there, and I do know for a fact a teacher told us to drop our things and run to the fence. They did not tell us what was going and we stood outside for 2 hours not prepared for the cold weather.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who's more pathetic. The politician, the cops, the media or us. We are going to go broke while at the same time denying our children of and education and raising them to see a threat around every corner. PATHETIC!
ReplyDeleteParkside needs one centralized location for students to be taken to in case of emergency I.e. a stadium or area with enough bleachers for students to be housed at that can be monitored properly. Safety is the number one concern put your money where your mouth is and make sure they have what the other high schools in the area have.
ReplyDeleteIts called run, hide, fight. the teacher did the right thing. New protocol say that if you can, run from the building to a safe place. The teacher was right!!!
