MCE Women’s Business Center hosts event to inspire women entrepreneurs

SALISBURY -- The second annual Women’s Business Conference, hosted last week by MCE’s Women’s Business Center, focused on preparing women entrepreneurs for the challenges they may face in business. “We built on the success of our first conference and were able to attract some great speakers for our second event,” said Jennifer Currie, Director of the Women’s Business Center, which is based in Salisbury. The keynote address was by Mitzi Perdue, wife of the late poultry magnate Frank Perdue. Mitzi recently published a book about how Frank grew his business and his business tips. It’s also about life with Frank, and she provided her tips for business success. “Mitzi has been so supportive of the Women’s Business Center and the whole concept of helping women entrepreneurs succeed,” Currie said. “She really helped provide some valuable insight for those in the audience who are about to embark on a new adventure in business.” Mitzi is cosponsor of the Women’s Loan Fund that is offered through MCE that helps women entrepreneurs with start-up costs and other expenses starting or expanding a business. Other speakers included Vince Gisriel, owner of Sprout Creatives, who talked about web design and how to make your website the best it can be; Rachel Howard, from the Small Business Administration (SBA), who talked about the various SBA program available to women; LaCheryl Jones, of MDOT, who discussed the MBE & SBE certification process, Kelly Drexel, of M & T Bank, who went over banking and finance issues; Ann Shaw, of The Law Firm of Ann Shaw, who discussed all the legal issues that business owners need to understand; Sumathy Chandra Shekara & Brooke Berezowski of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC), who talked about how the SBDC helps small business owners, and John Franke, of SCORE, who discussed the various resources and services they have to offer. More than 35 women attended the conference held at the Hampton Inn in Salisbury last week.

The Time Nature And Racism Teamed Up To Wipe Out A Whole Town

Thousands of people crammed into a haphazard housing project, surrounded by a massive river, and secured only by a system of dikes. It was a recipe for disaster, one that saw a growing city reduced to flooded marshlands in less than a day.

In the 1940s, Vanport, Ore. was the center of a booming World War II-era shipyard industry, quickly becoming the second largest city in the state. But both its origin, and its destruction, came about thanks to the racially discriminatory housing practices of neighboring Portland across the river.

As the Smithsonian's Natasha Geiling reports, Oregon's history of racism (it was illegal for blacks to move there until 1926) created a "pristine utopia, where land was plentiful and diversity was scarce." But as World War II saw white males drafted to serve overseas, a labor shortage pulled in a great migration of blacks from the south.

Ever Cheat At Monopoly? So Did Its Creator: He Stole The Idea From A Woman

Monopoly can be pretty addictive once you start playing it, right? Well, for author and journalist Mary Pilon, searching for the game's true origins proved just as consuming. She writes:

"In the process of reporting this story, I hacked off over a foot of hair in one anguished swoop, sold off many of my material possessions, was confronted by law enforcement for falling asleep in public places ... found Monopoly money in my linens when doing laundry, fretted about finances, [and] had nightmares about the various aspects of the story ..."

The result of all that anguish is The Monopolists, a book in which Pilon describes the history of Monopoly. Her book begins with what most people know — or think they know: During the Great Depression, an out-of-work salesman named Charles Darrow was desperate to support his family, so he toiled with a board game in his basement and invented what would become an American icon.

LAPD Shooting Update: Two Body Cameras, And A Gun Malfunction

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck are calling for calm and patience, as three investigations are underway into the police killing of a homeless man Sunday. Police say the man "forcibly grabbed" an officer's gun before he was shot to death.

Beck called the incident a tragedy that followed a "brutal, brutal fight."

The police confrontation with a man known as Afrika was filmed by at least two eyewitnesses. A dramatic video sparked criticism of the police, as it showed several officers attempting to hold him down before shots rang out..

From Los Angeles, NPR's Kirk Siegler reports:

"Two of the officers were wearing body cameras – part of a new pilot program in the LAPD's central city bureaus. However, so far, Chief Beck is refusing to make those videos public.

" 'I've reviewed the other videos,' Beck said. "It appears to me the officers acted compassionately up until the time when force was required.'

"Beck is promising a full investigation into whether the use of force was justified. Advocates for the homeless say the shooting highlights a worsening mental health crisis among Skid Row residents. Thousands of homeless people are concentrated in a few city blocks here, and this area has long been home to intense clashes with police."

Obama Immigration Fix: 4M Illegals Who Never Paid U.S. Tax, Get 3 Years Of Tax Refunds

You have to admit it sounds crazy. The normal rule is that the IRS can audit for three years, so you can usually go back three years to amend your return or claim a credit you forgot. What if you neverhad any income or never filed a return? Just wait. Since an illegal immigrant under President Obama’s executive action can now get a Social Security Number, the immigrant road map is clear.

First, get the Social, then claim the Earned Income Tax Credit for the three open tax years, and Voila! IRS sends you three years of tax refunds. Welcome to America! No matter that you never paid taxes, never filed a return, worked off the books, etc. All sins forgiven. And the IRS says this is the way the Earned Income Tax Credit works. Recall that the Earned Income Tax Credit—EITC to those in the tax biz—is the one that is responsible for billions in fraudulent refunds.

Liberal Judge Does Something Sickening to HELP US Muslim Teen Who Joined ISIS

Abdullahi Mohamud Yusuf, 18, of Minnesota was captured at the airport and charged with conspiring to support the Islamic State terror group.

U.S. District Chief Judge Michael Davis, a liberal and Clinton appointee, has decided that rather than send Yusuf to prison that he would be better served mentoring young teens.

Davis freed Yusuf on bond and Yusuf is staying at a halfway house.

According to the AP, while there he will be “allowed to work with a group that promotes civic involvement as a way to keep youth engaged, with hopes of keeping him on a positive track and reintegrating him into society.”

The AP added that he would continue, “working with coaches, and hopes to eventually continue his college studies.”

A Letter To The Editor: Family Farm Survival Information

Dear Folks,

I am deeply concerned that in the process of living our daily lives, we have forgotten the importance of being involved in what is occurring in the world around us. Agriculture is suffering one of worst attacks that I have seen it suffer in the past 26 years I have been a contract poultry grower. The majority of the attack are propagated by water melon environmentalists ( a phrase coined by Ted Wycall a organic farmer who has regulated out of the state the ) they are green on the outside and red on the inside.

I came to the Eastern Shore from Baltimore County towards the end of the Savings and Loan Crisis; I was an operations manager for Citi Bank N.A. I came here with the dream of having a farm of my own, an opportunity that I could not have afforded to get into with out integrated poultry. My husband and I were able to get a federally guaranteed mortgage to buy an existing poultry operation an old one, but it was a start! We raised our son on this farm and since the 1980s have, added 2 more chicken houses to the existing 6 and built a nice house to replace the 800 square foot one we lived in for the first 5 years. We sent our son off to The United States Naval academy after a good education in the Wicomico County schools. My spouse learned everything he could about poultry and went off to work in Allied industry for several years. I stayed home and managed the farm. This farm has afforded me the opportunity to work at home raise our son and provided a good and comfortable life style. We will never be rich, but are comfortable. This is how most independent small business operates and functions. Over the years, we have had good years and made lots of money other years have not been so good. I have never had to go to Packers and Stock Yards to have an integrator problem resolved. I am aware they there if needed, the need has just not arisen. When problems occur, I have found most integrators are willing to resolve them. If you are not satisfied with an integrator, you have choices.

I love what I do and take pride in the birds I produce; I care deeply about the agricultural community. When people who do not understand our way of life and work to make changes that are detrimental to this lifestyle I take personal affront and so should you. Currently there are many bills that are being presented this week and next week in Annapolis. Many have the potential to forever change how we live, what we do and in time will eradicate it. I have outlined the bills below by priority and I hope you will take the time out of your schedule to at least send an email or phone these legislators and if possiblego up to Annapolis this week or next to let them know how you feel in person. If you need help or directions please call me or contact the DPI office.

The Farmers Rights Act

This bill will allow the Maryland State Government to control, review and monitor you contract with your poultry company. It will in essence:

See that you are paid a set amount of money for your chickens. The same as every other grower, no matter how hard you work or how much money you have put into your farm.

Is this what you want? I do not want this; I work hard as most of you do. I want compensation for the extra efforts I put out. Only in a communistic society does this occur. In a democracy small businesses compete, some flourish some do not.

If you have a problem with your integrator, the state will now help you. Have you ever noticed how long it takes to get anything done with the state?

Legislators from over the bridge are pushing these bills. They hail from Montgomery, Prince Georges, Baltimore City and the surrounding parts. The environmental community is informing them of our needs most likely. These legislators do not know what we do or how it works. I doubt if any of them have ever visited a chicken farm. Look at their profiles at the Maryland site for the bill. Most of these folks are on the environmental committee.

This is open-ended legislation, meaning the Attorney General can step in and add to this at anytime.

Next, it is possible they will tell us how many birds can be put in our houses, how many flocks we can have a year and possibly set up an inspection system with fees.

You must decide if this is how you want to live, even more deeply controlled by Government than you already are, If not then you must get up get out and do something about it before it is too late.

Do not assume some one will take care of this; we are the one who need to take care of this.

N. Korea Warns of 'Merciless Strikes' as It Launches 2 Missiles Into the Sea

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are on the rise, with North Korea warning of "merciless" war and launching two missiles as the joint United States-South Korean forces launched annual military drills on Monday.

The communist country test-fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea from Nampo, located 37 miles southwest of Pyongyang, North Korea, early Monday. Both flew about 310 miles, according to South Korea's Defense Ministry.

The test firings of missiles and rockets are often means of expressing dissatisfaction and are conducted regularly, especially during this time of the year. North Korea denounces the annual joint military exercises by U.S. and South Korean forces as rehearsals for a northern invasion aimed at toppling the country's regime.

TROOPERS PREPARE FOR PENDING SNOW STORM

Maryland State Police Press Release
03/04/2015 13:36

TROOPERS PREPARE FOR PENDING SNOW STORM
(Pikesville, MD) – Maryland State Police, in coordination with, the State Highway Administration, and other local agencies prepare for the approaching snow storm.

Colonel William M. Pallozzi, Acting Superintendent of the Maryland State Police, reminds motorists to use caution due to the possibility of hazardous driving conditions that may arise from the pending snow storm. Colonel Pallozzi has also ordered barrack commanders across the state to be prepared to assess road conditions in their area and to deploy troopers as needed. Additional troopers, not normally assigned to road patrol, along with the State Highway Administration’s Coordinated Highway Action Response Team, C.H.A.R.T., will combine their efforts to assist disabled motorists as quickly as possible.

Troopers encourage motorist to use their best judgment when driving during rush hour on Thursday morning, when the snow is predicted to be at its heaviest. When there is a high volume of traffic on the roads, traffic is at a stand still. If traffic is at a stand still, snow plows are at a stand still and the roads do not get plowed.

Drivers are reminded of road restrictions if a snow emergency plan is activated in their county. If declared, parking is prohibited on highways and roads designated as snow emergency routes. During snow storms, abandoned and disabled vehicles cause major problems for snow removal and for troopers attempting to respond to emergency incidents. Maryland State Troopers encourage those who do not have to travel during the storm to stay off the roads. If it is necessary to travel, make sure your vehicle is in good working order and properly equipped with mud and snow tires or chains. It is also smart to have an emergency roadside kit in your vehicle.

In case of power failures, motorists are reminded of Maryland’s law concerning non-functioning traffic lights. The law requires all drivers approaching an intersection with a non-functioning signal to stop. Drivers may continue only after they have yielded to any vehicles or pedestrians already in the intersection. They must remain stopped until the intersection is clear and it is safe to proceed.

The latest traffic conditions, including road closures due to snow or ice will be available on-line at www.511md.org or by calling 5-1-1. Road conditions and views of the live traffic cameras are also available on the State Highway Administration website at www.roads.maryland.gov. Citizens are urged not to call Maryland State Police barracks simply to check on road conditions. Calls to police or 9-1-1 centers during the storm should be for emergency situations only.

Commercial vehicles are invited to wait out the storm at one of the Maryland State Police scale house parking lots that will be available overnight. Motorists are reminded if they abandon their vehicles on the interstate or on state roads, their vehicle will be towed. These vehicles need to be removed so they will not inhibit snow removal efforts.

Why more conservatives are backing solar power

When it comes to renewable energy, Barry Goldwater Jr. is willing to admit that the Democrats did something the Republicans should have done a long time ago.

"Conservative support for green energy has always been there, but the Democrats capitalized on it more than the Republicans," the former Republican congressman and Arizona legend told CNBC. "The Democrats did a better job of promoting it."

As a conservative, Goldwater has become a vocal advocate for solar energy in recent years. He currently serves as the chairman of "Tell Utilities Solar won't be Killed" (TUSK), a solar advocacy group that is pushing for energy independence across the country.

And he doesn't think there is anything odd about being a political conservative who also challenges utility companies for the right to choose solar over traditional forms of power. In fact, he finds it to be the natural outcome of true political conservatism.
