For the fourth straight year, the U.S. high school graduation rate has improved — reaching an all-time high of 82 percent in the 2013-2014 school year, the Department of Education announced Tuesday. Achievement gaps have narrowed, too, with graduation rates ranging from 89 percent for students classified as Asian/Pacific Islanders to 62.6 percent for English-language learners.
"It is encouraging to see our graduation rate on the rise and I applaud the hard work we know it takes to see this increase," said Education Secretary Arne Duncan in a statement.
The growth in graduation rates has been steady since states adopted a uniform way of tracking the rate five years ago. This good news comes at the same time that performance on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (often called the "Nation's Report Card"), has dipped. Scores on the SAT are down too.

They make it so easy these days, you would have to full on stupid not to be able to graduate.
ReplyDeletethat's because they are just letting "contract" students get the same diploma that other students actually earn. this is just a disgrace to those students that work for it. I know this because my son is a "contract" student that just has to show up and not disturb the class in order to pass while my other 3 children are on the honor roll of the same school. There is nothing I can do about it either, so don't believe the hype about this meaning anything. Diplomas are worthless.
ReplyDeleteJust a record sized box of hammers...
ReplyDeleteOf course, with the dumbing down of tests and the padding of scores, that doesn't mean these people 'graduating' actually know anythng.
ReplyDeleteBut you can be sure they feel real good about themselves.
So??? No big deal. This is what I would expect as a result of lowering the standard of education. A graduation certificate means very little these days.
ReplyDeleteLet's not confuse quantity with quality, Maryland.
ReplyDelete9:56, Nor does the future of a college degree. It's all about the money and dumbing down America. Liberal politicians don't want leaders, they want followers. Heck, just look at the majority of those running for President. I mean, seriously, Hillary Clinton is actually a front runner??? Does it get any more corrupt? Yet these uneducated dummies think, well, we got a black President, now let's get a woman President.
ReplyDeleteHow many of these would not have graduated in the 70's and 80's?
ReplyDeleteI axe you this pacific question!
the real meaning of 'NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND'
ReplyDeleteand then they can get taxpayer subsidized remedial study at the local taxpayer subsidized community college they get accepted to!
The threshold of getting an HS diploma is at an all time low...Just show up and you'll get pushed through.
ReplyDeletea school is more about teaching how to obey orders than it is about education. one does not need a diploma or degree to be successful, as has been demonstrated multiple times in not only this country but world wide. some basic formal education is needed but it is not the end all to a person's worth.
