This attitude of more superior than thou is the reason there is so many people not trained for real manual labor and jobs that build industries. We once could support ourselves but Walmart can import everything and we eat it up Sad
I also believe that trade schools are getting a really bad rap these days. It is evidenced by lowered enrollments in trade schools, as well. I have a Bachelor of Science (4yrs+) in El. Ed, and a skill from a trade school. I've used my skill for 25 years to make a living. I was only able to use my degree, with its certification, for about 7 years without investing (out of my own pocket) in further education. I couldn't afford the advanced education- tuition, without taking on debt, and I couldn't afford that debt without the job in the 'said' profession. I have continued to make a living, as well, have a job, with my skill for over 20 years. EVERYONE needs a skill, if not a variety of skills, to fall back on, when the job market is iffy. A degree is NOT A GUARANTEE of a life long profession. Wake up America!!
We owe it to our kids, to ensure they have at least one marketable job skill by the time they are ready to go to college. Whether that's plumbing, carpentry, haircutting, computer programming, automotive repair skills, or a second language, what's important is that they can use that skill to work for themselves if necessary. When someone graduates from college, unless it's a specialized "professional training" degree such as in nursing or a law degree, the graduate doesn't know a damn thing about how to perform any job at all.

Always have a backup plan and the skill set to be successful at it.
