Free Thanksgiving dinners offered in Ocean City, Berlin

Celebrate Thanksgiving with a free meal and fellowship at two local churches.

For the 37th year, the Ocean City Baptist Church will be having its annual Thanksgiving dinner at the North Division Street parish.

Members of the church and community volunteers prepare and serve dinner which includes turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, string beans, cranberry sauce, pumpkin and cherry pie with whipped cream, coffee, tea, cider and rolls.

“It is a family event and we always tell people don’t be alone. It’s great fellowship and you always meet someone you never met before,” said Pastor Sean Davis.

About 150 volunteers will be on hand to help out during this year’s dinner and most live in the community.

Speaking of a free meal are you aware that the volunteers at the Salisbury Fire Department Stations 1 and 2 used County Funds that was given to them from the Wicomico County Executive for operating costs to fund a banquet for them. Yes they spent over $15,000 hard earned tax money from the County to pay for a "Volunteer Appreciation Banquet." A volunteer appreciation banquet for what?? They are not taking any calls but a few. They have to re-alert for Station 2 all the time and the paid firemen at Station 16 have to take most of the calls for them. Their service to the citizens of Wicomico County has been pathetic to say the least. They have been an embarrassment for many years now under the leadership of Rick Hoppes.

Not only did they fund a banquet for free food, steak dinners, but they got drunk at our expense. Free steaks and drinks at the Fountains in Salisbury. That's right they rented out the entire reception hall to reward themselves with a free meal and booze at the tax payers expenses.

Not only was this a travesty to the tax payers it was a top secret banquet that was by invitation only for just a few volunteers and no paid firemen were invited. Absolutely no paid firemen were invited. I am a career firefighter and I know that for a fact. The volunteers treat us like crap all the time.

This "Volunteer Appreciation Banquet" was held this past Saturday November 14, 2015. Was Bob Culver invited to this banquet? Was Mayor Jake Day? I don't know if he was, but he certainly liked all the pictures I saw of the banquet on Facebook so he obviously approves of this wasteful spending.

Since Bob Culver is doing an excellent job with weeding out the wasteful spending in the County can you please post this so that he and the rest of the tax payers see how bad the volunteers are wasting our tax dollars.

    Thank you for your consideration.
