Study Finds 2/3 of Patients on Antidepressants Are Not Depressed

America is well-known for being a highly medicated society. Antidepressants in particular are a big moneymaker for the pharmaceutical industry, since at least 1 in 10 Americans are on these pills. But when you compare our level of pharmaceutical consumption to that of other countries, it’s obvious that our doctors are prescribing them to people who are not actually depressed.

A recent study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry came to the same conclusion. The researchers conducted multiple interviews with antidepressant users in the Baltimore area. They found that 69% of themnever had a depression disorder. They also considered other conditions that are commonly treated with antidepressants, such as OCD, panic disorder, social phobia, and anxiety disorder. 38% of the patients never met the criteria for those ailments.

  1. How do you expect the DR (or Physician's Assistant) to "Filter Out" these borderline people in the 3 MINUTES allowed for him/her to diagnose and treat the patient.??

  2. I was taking antidepressants for years. At 56, my son said to try marijuana. I did. A little every day since then, four years ago. No more antidepressants and their mind dulling and physical side effect, no more weeks and months of depression. I'm sure that it's not for everybody, but it works for me.
And side effects? Nope. Just calmer and not sad.

  3. Watch tonight's national news. count how many ads are for ED or depression, or people who cant sleep. Then ask yourself why the media wont ask about the connection between mind altering drugs and shootings. They wont and never will. Oh, and they own the democratic party. Oh, and they are inventing new "disorders" everyday to create a market AND to med up your kids. Take your soma, people.

  4. People want to know what has happened to our country. Well right here is what. A large, large portion of our population is on some type of a drug or another. It's disgusting. I am fortunate to not be on any type of drug and I will tell you that it's like zombies when you are out and about.

And just so everyone on pills and all know, people who don't eat that crap can always tell when someone is on them. A lot of the time you can hear it in the speech.

    It's just disgusting.

  5. @10:35 when I was diagnosed I took a diagnostic test plus had a set of blood work done to rule out other reasons. You're right, it takes longer than a few minutes. It also takes a willingness on the patient's part to be involved in their treatment.

  6. Antidressions are given for other conditions. For me, it was headaches which I had everyday for years. An antidepression was the only medication that ever helped and I was able to function without constant pain. Pain medicine did not help and I did not like taking them.
