Police Crack Down on Calling, Texting While Driving

Police in the Hampstead area are targeting motorists this week who get distracted by using their cellphones while driving. The use of handheld cellphones while driving is illegal in Maryland.

On Monday, deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with members of the Maryland State Police and the Hampstead Police Department on a Distracted Driving Initiative, sponsored by the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

From 2 p.m. to about 6 p.m., the law enforcement personel patrolled the area of Route 482 and the Route 30 Bypass, according to a story posted on the Facebook page of the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office. The focus on this enforcement effort was handheld cell phone use, although the police made traffic stops for other violations.

  2. What about the cops that drive around with their cell phones glued to their head?? Are they not just as much a danger as a regular citizen? Hypocrites!

  3. Just obey the law you idiots , leave the cops alone and worry about your own a$$ , pay attention to driving , I don't want you to kill any of my family. You don't even want to think about what would take place if hurt or injure any of my family or myself.
Last week I did notice that 90% were ladies talking on the cell and putting on make-up while driving .

  4. You are exempt from this law depending on what license plate you have ie. state gov. , local gov. , state highway, etc.

  5. Ah , struck a nerve 7:14 , sorry about that , police have to respond to calls whether it's on the radio or cell phone . The use of cell phones while driving is against the law , it hasn't been enforced yet. But , people like you will get tickets , it is a moving violation , you have been warned lady.

  11. As I predicted.
More and more military style "campaigns" by the police against the citizens. For new and creative reasons, believe that. Revenue must be raised. You WILL comply.
More fines, more fees, more "enforcement".
Of course, it's for our own good. Of course it is. And for the children, too, for God's sake!
The world has never seen a culture or a people so watched, so under scrutiny of every kind, in every way, from our homes to our work and everywhere between. Now, "looking down" (!??) while in your car can trigger a Gestapo response. And a revenue producing ticket.
    You WILL "comply".
    Keep cheering.

  12. 10:06 Wait until you get rear ended by someone texting on a cell phone. Then you will sing a different tune.

  13. The NSA is enforcing it. They will be listening for engine noise too when they screen all our phone calls now.

  14. 2:40...The reason I put that sarcastic "it's for the children...." comment was to illustrate there are always people who are willing to trample on our rights in order to solve a personal grudge, i.e., Nazi checkpoints for drunk drivers, warrantless searches to catch terrorists, jailing reporters, confiscating citizens property without charges or trial, the list is endless.
MY point (which you missed) was that sure, we can virtually eliminate whatever the "crime of the week" police come up with, but at what cost?
For those of you who NEED to be watched, monitored, and controlled, well, this country is turning into a paradise for you, huh??
For people who can run their lives and think for themselves, not so much.
And we need to get rid of all the wanna-be Nazi rulers who think that whatever it takes to accomplish the newest "campaign" against the people is perfectly reasonable, and to hell with the Constitution.
    Hang them FIRST.
    Keep cheering.
